Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) has urged residents and visitors to avoid using disposable barbecues or lighting campfires and wildfire risks soar. With many parts of Dorset already banning campfires, the fire service is also reminding people to dispose of cigarettes responsibly.
The amber alert marks the second issued this year, with dry conditions forecast throughout early April.
In May 2020, a large fire at Dorset's Wareham Forest in May 2020 destroyed more than 220 hectares of land. The blaze, which lasted more than two weeks, was believed to have started from a disposable barbecue.
‌
Since the fire, a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) has been in place at Wareham Forest, with further restrictions being considered across Dorset, including fines for lighting barbecues, fireworks, and dropping cigarettes in vulnerable areas.
Anyone who spots a wildfire is urged to call 999 immediately.
‌
Fire services in Greater Manchester issued a similar plea after following a second fire at Blackstone Edge, near Littleborough, on Thursday night (March 27).
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also said on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday (March 30): "A huge number of firefighters and resources are needed to control a wildfire. They can also cause a lot of damage and disruption.
"Please #BeMoorAware and act responsibly when enjoying the moorlands. Never have a barbecue or start a fire."
‌
Greater Manchester firefighters said in a video on Thursday: "Wildfires cause serious damage to wildlife and use a lot of fire service resources to put out.
"We want to remind you to act responsibly on the moors. No fires, no barbecues, no fireworks and no discarded cigarettes.
