"The View's" Whoopi Goldberg attacked Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) for saying that if the federal government helps southern California after the wildfires, the funds should be "conditional."
"This is the thing: a burnt house doesn't care who you voted for," Goldberg said. "When you've lost everything, that's not what is on your mind, okay? And for you to threaten and forget all the people you think live out there with all the money, it's all the folks who work in the banks, who do hair, who write the tickets that need to be — all those people, they also lost their homes."
She said that demanding strings attached to funding makes her hope California will respond by saying, "Listen, if this is how you're going to deal with our money, because, again, Mike Johnson and all of you nice Republicans, none of this is coming out of your pocket. This is money we have paid collectively to make sure that when things like this happen, we have what we need. ... But for you to act like you're giving this money out of your pocket is beyond shameful."

She continued, saying that she hopes California responds by withholding tax dollars being sent from their state to the federal government. While California is a state, it remains the fifth largest economy in the world, the governor's office confirmed last year.
"You don't want to play this game," Goldberg said. "This is not a good game for the country. What is wrong with y'all?"
She went on to acknowledge some of the people who are working to help raise money for survivors but said, "That's why I don't understand why our own government thinks taking a dump on us is going to work."
