When granted her newest passport, actor Hunter Schafer revealed that the gender label has shifted from female to male.
Schafer is recognised as one of the most prominent transgender actors of her time, best known for playing Jules in the HBO drama Euphoria. While the 26-year-old actor has identified as female throughout her adult life, her government-issued ID for her latest passport has been reversed in accordance with President Donald Trump’s ruling to enforce guidelines based on sex assigned at birth.
While Schafer has said that the decision didn’t have any adverse effects on her activities, she posted a video detailing her issues, saying, “I don’t need it, but I do think it’s worth posting to sort of note the reality of the situation and that it is actually happening. And I was shocked. I was shocked because I didn’t, I don’t know. I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen.”
Schafer also posted the video on TikTok, which has been suspended in American law since Trump took office. While the entire app wasn’t available to the American public, it has since been reinstated temporarily.
This latest ruling from the Trump administration is the first in a long line of ordinances involving the trans community. Among other guidelines, the administration is also set to limit trans women from playing on school sports teams as well as prohibiting them from enlisting in the military.
Schafer also gave a direct message to the Trump administration regarding trans rights, saying, “Trans people are beautiful. We are never going to stop existing. I’m never gonna stop being trans. A letter and a passport can’t change that. And f— this administration.”
While there are plans to begin production on the latest season of Euphoria, Schafer also admitted to being in the dark on many of the details, saying that she has no idea what will happen in the next season. There is no set release, but the creators are hoping to have the next batch of episodes on the air by 2026.
