SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Yonhap) -- "I consider myself a bit complicated—a ‘masterpiece’ with multiple personas. Like a work of art that reveals something new each time you look at it," said Minnie of girl group (G)I-DLE.
Minnie debuted as a solo artist with her first mini-album HER. During an interview on the 20th at Cube Entertainment’s headquarters in Seoul, she described the album as a collection of stories about herself, written from a third-person perspective. Minnie likened herself to a "masterpiece" or "muse."
"This album contains experiences I've had and stories I wanted to share," she explained. "It’s like my personal diary, featuring tales from both the past and present."
Since debuting as the group’s main vocalist in 2018, Minnie has impressed with her exceptional vocal abilities. With HER, she now showcases her diverse charms—at times cute, at times chic. Minnie was closely involved in crafting the album’s visuals, selecting pink and red as the main colors.
"Red represents the chic and intense Minnie that people are familiar with, while pink symbolizes the softer, lovelier side of me," she noted. "We reflected this in the album packaging, which features LP-inspired designs in pink and red."
The album includes seven tracks, such as the titular HER, the pre-release song Blind Eyes Red, and collaborations like Drive U Crazy (featuring fellow member Yuqi) and Obsession (featuring WayV’s Ten). The title track HER blends a straightforward progression with a funky topline, capturing Minnie’s multifaceted personality. Rapper BIG Naughty co-wrote the lyrics.
Minnie revealed she had been working on solo songs for 4–5 years and personally contributed to the composition or lyrics for all the tracks. "I was determined to be deeply involved," she said. "I always wanted to take part as much as possible if I ever released a solo album. It’s been seven years since my debut, and I wanted to share stories that truly reflect me because I know fans have been eagerly waiting."
As the only Thai member of (G)I-DLE, Minnie has spent 10 years in Korea, including her trainee days. Despite her fluency in Korean, songwriting remains a challenge.
"Even though I know a lot of words, it’s still hard to express thoughts beautifully," she admitted. "So I study diligently and analyze other artists’ lyrics to incorporate my honesty and sincerity into my work."
Minnie’s journey from a teenager boarding a flight from Thailand with dreams of becoming a K-pop star to a global icon in a chart-topping group has been extraordinary.
With hits like TOMBOY, Queencard, and Nxde, (G)I-DLE reached new heights last year, winning "Record of the Year" at the Melon Music Awards for the first time since their debut. Before accepting the award, the group announced their contract renewal with Cube Entertainment—a bold and transparent move.
Reflecting on the group’s success, Minnie said, "It’s beyond anything I imagined. Releasing a solo album was a dream come true, and my next goal is to top the Billboard charts. It’s a lofty dream, but one worth pursuing."
She also expressed gratitude for winning a grand prize, saying, "Receiving an award like that made me feel recognized. It was an unforgettable day—I cried a lot, and even the members who rarely cry got emotional."
Regarding the contract renewal, she shared, "We had candid discussions, and we all agreed to keep (G)I-DLE going for a long time. This process brought us closer together as a group."
Finally, Minnie reflected on the hardships of her career. "There were times when being a singer was tough, and I missed home during my three years as a trainee. But I persevered, thinking about my parents who supported my dreams. My mom hasn’t heard my solo album yet, and she’s really looking forward to it," she said with a laugh.
