Pep Guardiola does not know when Kevin De Bruyne will finish his career with Manchester City. The Belgian has announced that he is leaving at the end of the season, but that date is unknown due to the first edition of the revamped Club World Cup.
De Bruyne's contract is up at the end of June, but the Club World Cup goes on until the middle of July. While a separate transfer window has been set up to allow clubs to get around this situation, it is unclear whether the Belgian will head out with City to the United States or if he will say his goodbyes before then.
"It's a good question. I don't know," said Guardiola. "We have to talk, [for] the Club World Cup we have to extend the contract. He has to decide. Hopefully he can continue playing football in another place, but I don't know.
"The club has to talk to him and he has to say what he wants to do. It's the first time he plays this competition and at the end of the first three games he is still under contract but after that if we go through I don't know.
"Kevin has to tell and after that for the fact that the future can it be legally possible or not."
Wherever it ends, Guardiola will bid a fond farewell to a player who has been there for every one of his games having arrived before he did. De Bruyne will attempt to go out on a high in a spell that will be bittersweet as the clubs says goodbye to one of its finest ever players.
"Kevin is a special person and a special player who has been treated in a special way. Of course we had conversations," he said. "It's one decade. Do you know how many meetings, training sessions. Except days off, international breaks. Every single day we were together, thinking now it will be over.
"Come on. What should happen if you weren't affected? It was an emotional moment with Sergio [Aguero] and was not easy for me to tell him that he wasn't continuing because there are players and this situation is always so difficult.
"The emotions there are involved. They give us too much. Everyone benefited from the skills from Kevin. 180 goals and assists is huge. We're going to enjoy the last few months together but emotionally it's tough."
