A man who found himself under the 'overwhelming' weight of five-figure debt has spoken of his journey to financial freedom.

The 27-year-old ran up thousands in debt and found himself "in a bad place" before he sought advice from HSBC. By using the banking giant's free 'financial health check' service, he eventually worked his way out of his financial black hole.

The bank's constructive advice put him back on the right track. And now HSBC are offering the same service across the country - regardless if you're a customer or not.

HSBC is rolling out the service to its branches off the back of the success of its telephone service. A spokesperson says the bank has already offered personalised financial advice to over 11,000 customers and non-customers alike.

The new face-to-face offering will hit more than 100 branches across the UK in just a few weeks, with additional locations slated to offer it in the months to follow. Originally launched in 2016, the Financial HealthCheck proved hugely popular due to the economic strains inflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

An HSBC spokesperson said it offered those grappling with unforeseen financial difficulties a lifeline in troubling times. The 27-year-old man spoke of his experience, having been given some "really good options" to help him out of his ÂŁ18,000 debt.

He said: "It was also suggested I sit down with my partner and tell her about the situation which I subsequently did and it all ended up working out well and she has supported me throughout." The customer says he has now paid the debt off and even looks forward to monthly chats with the bank to discuss his progress.

Starting from today (Monday, March 3), HSBC is offering opportunities for both customers and non-customers to meet with trained branch staff for in-depth financial discussions, reports Devon Live. These half-hour sessions are designed to evaluate and enhance participants’ financial wellbeing and resilience, delving into topics like spending habits, savings objectives, responsible borrowing, and broader financial aspirations.

They're also introducing financial wellbeing seminars, checks for unclaimed benefits, and a digital tool for gauging one's financial fitness online. Sally Williams, the head of HSBC UK’s branch network, emphasized the significance of financial wellbeing: "Financial wellbeing is often understated or not talked about, but is such an important part of our lives."

"While it is almost five years ago, it was really the experience of many people during the Covid-19 pandemic which shone a light on individual and family finances and got people to think about it more and take action, whether that was out of necessity or voluntarily.

"We understand that everyone's financial journey is unique. Our Financial HealthChecks are there to help people whatever their financial needs, from providing a safe and supportive environment for customers to discuss their financial concerns, through to helping develop a tailored plan to achieve their goals and ambitions.

"Like a medical check-up, it could help in identifying areas that may need to be addressed, but with a personalised approach it can also help people build a solid foundation for a stronger financial future. This, like our other financial wellbeing tools, are a valuable resource open to everyone, not just HSBC UK customers."
