'I felt a very uncanny familiarity with you': Gabriel Luna and Pedro Pascal break down Tommy and Joel's relationship in 'The Last of Us' season 2 | The Mary Sue
Pedro Pascal loves me (and the Mary Sue) and breaks down Tommy and Joel's relationship with Gabriel Luna for 'The Last of Us' season 2.
The Last of Us is back and one of the joys of season 2 is seeing Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and his brother, Tommy (Gabriel Luna) get to share screen time together. We love the Miller boys!

As part of the preparation for season 2 of the series, I was lucky enough to submit a question for a global press conference for the second season. There, the cast answers questions both in person and submitted online and I wanted to know about the brothers between seasons and how the two actors enjoyed working on these characters in this season versus season 1.
Season 2 takes us five years later. Meaning Joel Miller is well into his 60s and both he and Tommy are older and more comfortable in their roles in the apocalypse. My question simply was how has it been growing the brother’s relationship between seasons. But before it was answered, Pedro Pascal did give me a beautiful shout out that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

But then Pascal and Luna both went on to talk about how the two of them bonded between seasons and allowed these two to grow. You can see a transcript of their answers below:
Pedro Pascal: I think that there was just like a very, very well-placed arc for us. You know, I started the season with [Tommy]. We started season one together on D-Day. Right? And so there was a kind of bonding initiation process stepping into all of it. We had our rehearsals and in pre-production we went river rafting.
Gabriel Luna: Yeah, we did go river rafting in the Bow River, which was really nice…with Nico [Parker].
Pedro Pascal: Really, really fun. And then we were separated and then put in the snow together. And we had a real kind of intimate that my – I had you there when I feel like a lot of the flesh of my character started to kind of display itself and got to be played. And so in season two, it felt like a real natural building of what we had established as characters and as scene partners.
Gabriel Luna: And I agree and in that, I think when we first started, we had a really nice FaceTime call where I felt a very uncanny familiarity with you. And of course…
Pedro Pascal: [with mock surprise] Everybody feels that I’m so fake.
Gabriel Luna: No, no, no, no. No, there’s a sweetness, there’s a real sweetness. And your face… Maybe it’s just felt very familiar and just… like family.
Pedro Pascal: The borders were still closed, and you were in quarantine. I was the last person to escape.
Gabriel Luna: Well, you sent me that piece by – the Blood Meridian piece – so we could work on just the accent. And we both spent time in Texas. I grew up in Austin. You spent time San Antonio. So, we had that to work on, I think. But I think that the time that you and I had with Jasmila Zbanic rehearsing the scene in the bar was also a very strong bonding element. And you and I kind of sat there and took Craig’s words. We didn’t change a single word, we promise, but we just re-jumbled the whole thing.
Craig Mazin: That was amazing. Everybody’s generally incredibly respectful of the writing we do. But we’re also respectful you guys. And sometimes a director would say like, “Oh, do we need this line?” And I’d be like, “I guess not.” And then Pedro would come over and say, “Let me just defend the script for a second,” which I like, [grabbing his chest] my heart, as a writer. I’m like, “Oh, thank you!” But these guys took that scene and came back and they’re like, “Look, we’ve taken this chunk. We moved here, took this chunk and moved it here.” And I read and I was like, “F*** me, that’s so much better.” And I would have told you if I’d thought not. But that’s the level of attention and care, they’re not just f***ing around. And that scene is a beautiful scene. That’s a beautiful moment between the two of you. I love that scene. And then the hurt and then and what it leads to…
Gabriel Luna: I think that and just listening to him pour his heart out.
Craig Mazin: Yeah. It set it up…
Gabriel Luna: It set it up and that really fused us, I think, that we’ve carried in the second season.
