Former Real Madrid star, Angel Di Maria, has reacted to Cristiano Ronaldoâs recent claim of being the greatest player in the history of football.
Di Maria is of the opinion that his countryman, Lionel Messi is the best in history for many reasons.
The Argentina international mentioned that Messi has 8 Ballon dâOr in his trophy basket while Ronaldo has five.
However, many pundits and football fans have argued that the Ballon dâOr should not be a criteria to determine who the greatest player on earth is since the likes of Diego Maradona and Pele did not have the opportunity to win much of the individual gong.
Di Maria also mentioned the World Cup and Copa America won Messi. Although Ronaldo has won the European championships, he has not lifted the World Cup.
The GOAT debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has lingered for over a decade.
Di Maria has played with both superstars, playing alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2014.
He still Messiâs teammate internationally.
During a recent interview, as quoted by Infobae, the Argentina superstar was asked about Ronaldoâs comment.
âIâm not surprised, I was with him for four years. It was always like that. He always made those statements, he always tried to be the best, but well, he was born in a generation, just at a bad time, because another one was born who was touched by the magic wand. The reality is shown in numbers. One has eight Ballon dâOrs, the other five.
âThere is a very big difference. Being a world champion is another very big difference, having two Copa Americas. There are many differences, many. And then you see him in the games, you see it in every minute of every game, that one plays as if he were in the backyard. He hits the same goal as always and keeps doing it. And heâs been doing it for 18, 20 years.
âHow long has he been doing the same thing? And everyone says, âBut you already know what heâs going to do,â well, go mark him and heâll do it anyway and heâll still be 40 years old and still do tiki taka, tiki taka. Thatâs how it is. But, well, Cris is like that too. He always made statements that way. It was always the same. For me, Leo is the best in the world and the best in history, without a doubt.â
