'I moved to Glasgow as an Indian immigrant and accidentally joined an Orange Walk'
Indian comedian Hitesh Rathore moved to Glasgow on a whim - and the city inspired him to take up stand-up
The Glaswegian sense of humour inspired him to take up stand-up comedy, and he'll perform at the Glasgow International Comedy Festival in March.
Mr Rathore, who was a finalist in the Laurel Comedy Awards, told The Herald: "It was in lockdown, I was watching this TV show called Elementary. It had this song in it, âFeather on the Clydeâ. I had no idea where the Clyde was or what Glasgow was, but I decided I was going to move there.

âWhen I first arrived the taxi driver was taking me from the airport into town and I couldnât understand a word he said â I called my mum and I said âI can speak English, but I canât understand any of thisâ. I think my biggest achievement is figuring out how to understand and speak Glaswegian!
âWhere I came from in India it was like 50 degrees and then I get here and itâs minus seven."
Though he's now a proud adopted Glaswegian, the cultural differences weren't always easy to grasp.
Shortly after arriving in Scotland, Mr Rathore spotted what he assumed to be a parade passing in the street.
He says: "In my country when you join a parade itâs for a good cause, you join it to show support.
âSo Iâm like, âOK, Iâm here in Scotland, the first thing I want to do is support Scotland and understand the culture betterâ.
âIt was an Orange Walk that was happening, I started cheering like âyes, yes letâs go!â and in the end I even joined it.
âI was at the back walking with them in my jeans and t-shirt, I didnât know what I was doing.
âI saw people looking at me strangely and my friend was like, âmate, come out of thereâ.
âAfter living in Scotland for two years I can understand why they were a bit weirded out by what I was doing!"
Mr Rathore has named his show, which will take place at Platform on March 14 at 5.30pm, 'Chips, Cheese and Curry', a nod to both his adopted home city and his background.

âInitially I was going âwhat is this?â and itâs nothing like the curry you get in India.
âBut then I realised it was a perfect description of myself, Iâm from India and I feel half Scottish. So Iâm chips and cheese, and Iâm curry.
âI always knew I would use the name for something, even if it was a business, so I knew it was the perfect name for my show.
"If the show's about anything, it's just about being brave. Iâve taken a lot of inspiration from my mother, who has cancer so Iâve been going home a lot to see her.

âRecently I was home and a neighbour made some comment about her being bald, it was pretty bad. She went inside the house and I was thinking, âoh no she must be upsetâ. She came out with a stick and chased him down the street!"
While Mr Rahore feels like an adopted Glaswegian, things haven't always been easy.
He has often found himself the only person of colour on a comedy lineup, and set up a comedy show, 'Two Shades of Funny', specifically to give a platform to comics of minority ethnic backgrounds.
It features six comedians from different backgrounds, three of whom are women, and will be at Platform on March 16.
Asked if being a person of colour has affected his nascent career, Mr Rahore replies: "I try to flip things on the audience, I donât give what youâd expect from a brown comedian.
âSo for example, I do talk about racism but I do it from the perspective of âwhy racism is goodâ.
âUnfortunately it has happened a couple of times that someone has called me a P***, which is not nice for anyone.
âBut I looked up the word and it means âpureâ, so âPakistanâ means âpure landâ.
âSo what I do is to tell the audience that actually itâs a compliment, and now itâs their turn to pay me this compliment â no-one ever does!â

Director Lee Byung Hun, known for âExtreme Jobâ and âMelo Is My Nature,â has stepped down from helming Kim Eun Sookâs highly anticipated Netflix series âAll The Love You Wish Forâ (working title) starring Kim Woo Bin and Suzy.
On January 27, Edaily reported that Director Lee Byung Hun had left the project during production last year due to personal reasons.
Confirming the news, a representative from the production team stated, âIt is true that Director Lee Byung Hun stepped down for personal reasons.â They further revealed that Director Ahn Gil Ho of âThe Gloryâ joined the production as the B-team director in July 2024, helping to complete the filming. The representative added, âWe ask for your understanding that we cannot provide further details regarding the timing and reasons for Director Lee Byung Hunâs departure.â
Filming for the series was completed in late October last year, and post-production is currently in full swing, with the series set to premiere sometime this year.
The production team added, ââAll The Love You Wish Forâ requires significant technical work such as CGI, so we are dedicating great effort to post-production. A team of professionals from various fields has collaborated extensively to create what we hope will be one of the best projects of the year.â
Starring Kim Woo Bin, Suzy, Ahn Eun Jin, and Noh Sang Hyun, âAll The Love You Wish Forâ is a fantasy rom-com about an overly emotional genie trapped inside a lamp and the woman who helps him escape his prison. The drama is penned by Kim Eun Sook, the famous writer known for hit dramas such as âThe Glory,â âGoblin,â âMister Sunshine,â and âHeirs.â
