'I tried Burger King's new Whopper - here's my verdict on three key changes'
Burger King is implementing three key changes to the iconic Whopper burger, and Social News Deputy Editor Ariane was invited behind-the-scenes to try it out ahead of release
Burger King's most iconic burger is no doubt the Whopper - a staple on the menu since 1957. It's the most popular item at the fast food chain for many reasons, including its flame-grilled taste and fresh ingredients.
So when I heard Burger King was changing up its Whopper for the first time in years, I was intrigued, and probably along with other Whopper fans a bit nervous, to see how much they would change the much-loved item. I'm sure not many Whopper fans would want it to be changed beyond recognition.
I was invited to Burger King's Leicester Square location in London, for a behind-the-scenes look at what the 'new' burger would look - and more importantly, taste like, before it's being introduced to the public. I also spoke to Christian Binney, Burger King's Director of Food Development, who took me through what the changes actually are - before I tasted it myself.

Christian explained: "We've made some really great changes to what was already a brilliant burger. The Whopper has been around since 1957, it's our iconic burger. It celebrates everything that's flame-grilled and we've listened to our Whopper-lovers and burger-lovers over the years and we're always looking to see if we can improve it.
"It's a hard task because it's a great burger to start with. We've identified a number of key areas where we can dial up and make sure we're delivering awesome guest experiences every time." Below you'll find more about the three main changes.
Temperature of products served

One of the main areas Burger King realised it could improve was increasing the temperature of the product to improve taste and make sure it stays hotter for longer. This change is three-fold.
According to Christian, the equipment will be upgraded in some restaurants. But in terms of the product, they will be toasting the bun for a bit longer, and raising the temperature of the product to 55 to 60 degrees, which Christian says "really delivers the optimal experience". He added: "We've worked with the operations team to make sure the we're offering the same kind of consistency every time."
Change to how the patty is formed
The patty is 'juicier' and the bun is 'fluffier' (

The Whopper patties will now be formed in a different way, which will make them juicier and bring out the flame-grilled flavour even more. Christian explained: "We've also looked at the way the burger was formed, in terms of the patty itself. We're forming it a little gentler now. There's a bit more of a loose, juicier texture. It really does help dial up that flame-grilled flavour even more.
"The beef is still 100% English and Irish beef. All we've done is change how we form it into a patty. It has more of a looser texture. When you bit into it, it has more of a juicy, succulent feeling. All the other ingredients are the same, we freshly slice all of our onions and tomatoes every day. It's all fresh ingredients for the Whopper. Each Whopper is also made-to-order. So it's not sitting around, losing temperature."
Change to bun
There's a new glaze on the bun (

As well as toasting the bun for longer, there are also some improvements to the bun itself. Christian explained: "One of the biggest improvements that I think we've made is on the bun. We've really improved the softness and the resilience of the bun.
"We've improved the look and feel of it, and added a new glaze. It looks a bit more golden. It also tastes a lot better as well.
"It's the exact same style of bun - a five inch seeded bun, we've just looked at some of the fundamental, key ingredients in there to make it a bit more softer and fluffier, and keep it that way for longer."
My verdict of the improved Whopper
The burger looks even more delightful (

With these three changes, Burger King is hoping to create an "even juicier and fluffier" burger.
From looking at the burger, I would say the change it noticeable. I love a Whopper, and there's no doubt the revamp has made it look extra appealing. The bun, which has a different glaze, looks darker and more shiny, and is super soft.
It's only the inside that's toasted, which means the bun stays soft, but the inside doesn't become soggy from the ingredients.
I could definitely taste that the burger was juicier, and it's still got that distinctive flame-grilled taste - which has been even more ramped up, in my opinion. From looking at the patty, it does seem to have a looser, less compact texture.
That being said, Whopper fans don't need to worry that their favourite burger has completely changed. The tweaks are noticeable, but it's not a different burger.
Speaking of the changes, Christian added: "With the bun, the beef and the temperature of the product, I think we've lifted the Whopper even higher than it already was before. It's never tasted as good. I'm really proud of the work we've done so far. We're really proud to have no artificial colours, preservatives or additives in any of our food. All the changes we've made are using natural ingredients across the board. It makes it more challenging but it's also more true, authentic food. We don't have any secrets in our food. It's real, authentic flavour."
