OPINION: Channel 5's The Au Pair has sparked a mixed reaction from viewers, with Beyond Paradise actress Sally Bretton taking on the role of Zoe. Married to her successful husband Chris (played by Kenny Doughty), she is stepmother to Amber (Margot Pue) and Noah (Ripley Barden) and is eager to win their love.
However, Zoe finds herself in a love/hate relationship with the children, often frustrated by their reckless behaviour. Unbeknownst to her, the strange happenings are not the children's doing.
A significant part of Zoe's storyline revolves around her struggle to conceive naturally, and her desperation to have her own child. This issue has put a strain on her relationship with Chris, who is reluctant to have another child.

In the series, Zoe begins IVF treatment when she receives some shocking news from her doctor. She reveals her dark past regarding conception, a storyline that feels all too familiar.
While The Au Pair is a far cry from her role as Martha Lloyd in Beyond Paradise, both of Sally's characters share similar storylines. It was hard to separate Sally from Martha as she endured emotional torment at the hands of Sandrine (Ludmilla Makowski).
Fans of the actress will remember that in Beyond Paradise, Martha also embarked on a challenging IVF journey and tragically lost a pregnancy in one distressing scene. .
Like Zoe, Martha was determined to become a mother but ultimately chose to foster.

In an interview with Express.co.uk, and other media outlets, Sally revealed that she was drawn to the role because it marked a departure from her typical typecast in comedic roles. She explained: "I think I took it on because I hadn't done anything like that before â a melodrama âand the opportunity to take on something so different was really exciting.
"Everything I had done for years had been comedy, which was wonderful. And then I did Beyond Paradise, which touches on some drama and some sensitive issues.
"But this was a real dash at something very dramatic and I couldn't resist it. Normally there's much more lightness in my life though."
However, it can be challenging to separate Sally from her Beyond Paradise character, which she starred in alongside Kris Marshall. .
Nevertheless, her on-screen chemistry with Vera star Kenny Doughty, with whom she shares a tumultuous relationship, makes for captivating television.
The Au Pair airs on Channel 5 at 9pm.
