The Apprentice star Karren Brady thinks Chancellor Rachel Reeves has made a huge “misstep” – and says the current Labour government “lacks understanding” around business.

As a new series of the BBC competition gears up, with Lord Alan Sugar and Tim Campbell returning alongside Karren to put the contestants through their paces, Karren has spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about the latest tax decisions laid out in Reeves’ budget.

With the news breaking that millionaires and billionaires are choosing to leave the UK to set up businesses overseas, Karren slammed the current government.

She said: “I think I’d like to see a bit more positivity. I mean, all they talk about is the negative – how bad a shape the country’s in. What businesses want is stability and optimism, and if people are told they should be scared because the country’s in a mess, then they don’t go out and spend any money.

“They don’t invest in things. They don’t go to the high street. All of the businesses that require people to go out and spend their money don’t survive.

Sharing her thoughts on Reeves' tax hikes, she said: "I think that this tax on businesses really indicates that the government thinks it knows business, but actually lacks an understanding of how businesses operate and what actually happens. There is a misstep.”

Tim, however, suggested millionaires and billionaires will not “up sticks and disappear” if they have to pay more tax.

He said: “I think one thing I learned clearly from Lord Sugar, he said, ‘You work around the rules’. The rules are not there to stop you from doing stuff – the rules are there to make sure you’re aware of what to do and the boundaries set.

“I don’t think that if you’ve got to pay slightly more in terms of contributions, people are going to up sticks and disappear from the nation that they love.

“I think there needs to be a conversation about what policies we are promoting to encourage more businesses.”

The Apprentice returns on BBC One tonight at 9pm.
