'Like a dream': Much-loved Greater Manchester shop named one of UK's best
The UK best Indies Award for 2025 has been revealed and a North West business has scooped the top prize
A Greater Manchester business has been named one of the top 50 retailers in the UK. Wine shop and bar, Reserve Wines, has scooped the top award as part of prestigious guide celebrating the best businesses selling wines, spirits and beers.
Industry experts Hapers Wine & Spirit has recently revealed its top 50 Best Indies, which showcases the 'most dynamic' merchants based on a number of categories including product and service. Reserve Wines has landed in top spot and is described as a 'Northern Powerhouse of the indie world'.
Manchester Reserve Wines was founded by Kate Goodman back in 2003 and has gone on to open a number of shops and concessions across the region. Since opening its first branch on Burton Road in Didsbury its expanded its footprint to food halls, Mackie Mayor, The Picturedrome and Altrincham Market as well as Bents in Warrington.

“With well over 1,000 independent merchants in the UK, just making it into the Top 50 is pretty amazing, to make it to the Number One spot is like a dream," says founder Kate Goodman.
"The judges acknowledged our shared mission to inspire and delight wine lovers with exceptional service, unrivalled expertise, and an imaginative approach to wine. It's a great opportunity to celebrate and remind ourselves what makes Reserve Wines so special - our fantastic team and loyal and supportive customers.

"This award inspires us to continue pushing boundaries in the industry with exciting plans in the summer to launch a new store. Watch this space."
To decide its rankings, Harpers looked at the company ethos and how well that is met; the portfolio, including specialisms and points of difference; the services offered to customers and wholesale clients; and promotions and events. Its judges also looked at marketing activities, including social media and online presence; investment and growth in the business; training and advancement for staff; innovation in every shape and form; and sustainability principles.
Declared a 'North West Standout' by Harpers, the guide wrote of Reserve Wines: "From its West Didsbury flagship to Altrincham Market by way of Picturedrome Macclesfield and Mackie Mayor, this 21-year-old merchant has grown to be a Northern powerhouse of the indie world, folding in more than healthy wholesale, corporate and online arms to the business too.

"Describing itself as a ‘broad church’ merchant, it has never lost sight of its raison d’être; namely, to raise customer expectation through great service, unstuffy knowledge and ensuring that all who shop here have an enjoyable time, offering many exclusive and original finds."
The wine shop and bar concept is also praised by Harpers for its regular roster of exciting tastings, while its staff are described as 'never being afraid to experiment with new formats and wines'. It adds: "With B Corp next in its sights, this indie continues to set benchmarks for how successful and dynamic wine retailing can and should be done."
The founder of the South Manchester-born wine shop has also said that the concept was born out of an 'intimidating' visit to a local wine shop. Determined to create a friendly and inspiring community around wine and give customers a really good time, in the early days, founder Kate turned to YouTube to share her expertise and make learning about wine fun.
She was also scouted by the BBC, who invited her to be the Wine Expert for their Food and Drink Programme. She's also worked alongside world-famous chefs such as Michel Roux Jnr as well as opening four more sites across Manchester - and there's even another in the pipeline.
