The first pictures have been revealed of an nurse who was allegedly stabbed with a pair of scissors at a hospital.

Rumon Haque is charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article after Achamma Cherian was attacked on a ward at the Royal Oldham Hospital ward on Saturday afternoon. When she was attacked, and left fighting for her life, the 57-year-old nurse was on duty at the hospital's acute medical unit, reports the Mirror.

Greater Manchester Police said on Tuesday that she remained in hospital being treated for her injuries. Haque, 37, from Royton, appeared before Manchester magistrates court on Tuesday over the attack.

No pleas were given and Greg Kemp, defending, said there would no application for bail. He was remanded into custody and is due to appear again before the crown court in February. Haque, wearing a grey sweatshirt and flanked by two prison officers, was asked to identify himself and gave his name as “Mohammed Roman Haque”.

District Judge Jane Hamilton told the defendant: “The attempted murder is a matter that can only be dealt with by a crown court so the possession of a bladed article is going to go with it. You will next appear at Minshull Street Crown Court on February 18, in five weeks time. Between now and then you will be remanded in custody.”

Detective Superintendent Matt Walker from Greater Manchester Police's Oldham district said: “Our thoughts are with the nurse as she continues to receive treatment in hospital for her injuries, and our priority remains supporting her, her family, and her colleagues at this difficult time.

“We continue to work closely with our NHS colleagues to support anyone who has been affected by this incident.” Neighbours of Ms Cherian told a reporter on Tuesday that she and her husband had two children. Her husband, when asked, said he did not wish to comment on the case.

One neighbour, who didn't wish to be named, said: "I know she works as a nurse at the hospital I've seen her leaving for work around 8am in the morning. She's lived here since we moved here in 2007. I don't know much else about her or her husband but I think they've got two children. It's shocking what's happened."

Another neighbour said: "I've seen her walking home from her shift at the hospital around 8am in the morning. But I didn't know she was the nurse who'd been stabbed. It's terrible. They're a lovely family and have lived here a long time."
