There have been a few high-profile celebrity deaths over the past year which caused outpourings of public grief, and yet didn’t make it into the Oscars In Memoriam segment.

People were particularly outraged about Michelle Trachtenberg, who passed away last week, not making being included. Her premature death was truly shocking and saddening to people who’d grown up alongside her work. Although she was known mostly for her TV roles, she also appeared in ’90s flicks Harriet the Spy and Inspector Gadget as a child, not to mention she was in EuroTrip and 17 Again. Why the snub? It was upsetting to her fans, especially since the cause of death has yet to be known by the general public. It’s believed Trachtenberg underwent a liver transplant at some point before her death, which may have influenced her passing, but her family declined an autopsy for religious reasons.

Considering that Trachtenberg had TV royalty (Sarah Michelle Gellar), film royalty (Blake Lively) and actual royalty (Princess Eugenie) paying tribute to her in the last few days, it’s very odd that she wasn’t considered worthy of being highlighted in the In Memoriam reel. Fans immediately took to social media to let it be known how angry they were. “It’s shameful that the #Oscars didn’t include Michelle Trachtenberg in their memorial montage of all the actors/actresses who have passed within the year!!!!” one user wrote, alongside a gif of Trachtenberg.

“Michelle Trachtenberg not being mentioned in the In Memoriam section of the Oscars is upsetting, you are and will remain so so loved and admired Michelle,” wrote another user. Others pointed out that Gene Hackman’s body was found (in still mysterious circumstances) the day after Trachtenberg passed away, but the Oscars found time to make a tribute to him.

It wasn’t just fans of Trachtenberg who were upset. A few other actors who died recently were also left out of the In Memoriam. One of these was Tony Todd, best known for his work in the Candyman franchise. He passed away in November after a battle with cancer. Todd started a big fandom for himself over the years and his fans were angry about the lack of recognition from the Academy. (At the time of writing, his Wikipedia page even notes the Oscars In Memoriam snub). One fan wrote on X, “Leaving Tony Todd out of the memoriam segment is absolutely horrible. He dedicated so much to his craft and gave life to one of the most historically important horror icons. He was one of a kind and deserves recognition.” It’s hard to argue with that.

Another name left off the list was Shannen Doherty, another great performer lost to cancer. “No Shannen Doherty—star of one of the great films HEATHERS—in the In Memoriam is an outrageous slap in the face,” Dustin Putman on X wrote. “She was a groundbreaker in the way she stood up for herself and voiced her own opinions during a time when women in the industry were supposed to keep quiet.”

It’s worth pointing out that all these performers and more (there were several other omissions, including Olivia Hussey and Alain Delon) are included on a longer list on the Academy website. You can also argue that the Oscars ceremony simply wouldn’t have time for them all. But plenty would say in response, why didn’t they cut down some of the other segments then, like the clunky James Bond one? It’s hard to see the reasoning behind leaving so many beloved stars out of the In Memoriam presentation.
