Democrats may not have risen from their seats to cheer for President Donald Trumpâs speech Tuesday night, but it managed to draw some far-flung members of the GOP even closer together, none more so than Meghan McCain.
The daughter of late Sen. John McCain and former co-host of ABCâs âThe Viewâ responded to the presidentâs speech Wednesday morning, calling his words âbeautifulâ while admitting she found herself crying as Trump celebrated the life of a young guest he invited to attend.
It was Trumpâs recognition of DJ Daniel, a 13-year-old boy battling brain cancer whom he made an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service, that moved McCain. Her father died from a similar cancer in 2018.
âThis is the first time I can remember crying during a state of the union. Thank you President Trump. This is so beautiful,â McCain wrote on X. âAnyone who has been impacted by brain cancer knows how special this is.â
By late Wednesday the post had garnered more than 1.4 million views while scores of readers responded thanking the podcaster for setting aside her differences with Trump to celebrate young DJ.
âIâm so glad you are coming around @MeghanMcCain! Politics are a dirty business, but at his core, President Trump is a good man and loves America. I hope Americans can heal and come together,â a pro-Trump follow wrote back.
âIt [was] Undeniably beautiful. Your Dad would be Proud of you,â a second wrote, adding an American flag emoji.
Some of President Trumpâs most celebrated policies, from securing peace in Ukraine to ferreting out waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government, received intra-party praise from McCain, a neoconservative more in line with her late father, a Vietnam War veteran and supporter of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
âInject every single one of these policy proposals directly into my veins. In. My. Veins,â she wrote in another post.
In his remarks, the Republican president laid out his proposal to Ukraine, which offers the opportunity for peace if it cedes eastern portions of its country captured by Russia and agrees to future deals with the U.S. around rare earth minerals. The compromise would see both sides walk away claiming victory, allies of Trump say, while bringing peace to a region that has been at war for two and a half years.
McCainâs comments were the second time since January that she has praised Trump after years of throwing shade his way, most notably during his first term. The two had a vicious series of public spats over Trumpâs past remarks about her late father.
Days after the inauguration, McCain called on the Never Trump movement to lay down its swords and come together for the good of the country.
âI am sorry some of you are so disappointed I never became a Liz Cheney/never trump/resistance figure,â she wrote to her 820,000 followers on X. âI will always have my personal issues with Trump but I do support and am grateful for many of the much needed policy changes his administration is implementing. I also, as you know support and admire many of his cabinet members.
âI choose to live in the real world and accept the reality of the political landscape we live in. Nothing productive comes from screaming your head off on CNN and calling everyone who voted for Trump racist and ignorant. It also just isnât accurate,â she went on. âI also donât understand people who think their worldview is the only world view that exists and the most cruel, close minded, awful people Iâve ever worked with or encountered were progressive democrats.â
She concluded: âI have lived my entire adult life a proud, outspoken conservative woman and Trump never changed or morphed that, unlike it did for so many others who abandoned their principles.â
