Don’t expect another Back to the Future film, as co-writer Bob Gale seemingly shoots down the possibility despite fan desires.
On Sunday, February 2, the Saturn Awards honored Back to the Future on its 40th Anniversary with the George Pal Memorial Award. Gale, Christopher Lloyd, and Emma Thompson received the honor, and the writer addressed fan desire for a fourth installment of the sci-fi film.
“People always say, ‘When are you guys going to do Back to the Future 4? And we say, ‘F*** you!’ Gale jokingly said while accepting the honor. “You can quote me on that.”

So we made Back to the Future: The Musical, which Chris and Lea have attended on several occasions.”
Watch on DeadlineThe musical adaptation of the film ended its Broadway run last month, and a touring production continues throughout North America. Productions of the musical are opening in Japan, Germany, and Australia later this year.
“So, my God, Back to the Future, I’m going to be doing it for the rest of my life,” he said. “I love it. Who could ask for anything more, right?”
Last year, Back to the Future director and co-creator Robert Zemeckis echoed a similar sentiment, shutting down the idea of remaking or creating a sequel to the sci-fi franchise.
“You know, we have to say, ‘There are different things that might work.’ Something like that, you know? But to remake the movie or to suggest that there’s a Back to the Future 4, it just isn’t in the cards,” Zemeckis said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
Zemeckis said Universal has asked him if he was open to revisiting the Back to the Future universe, joking that the studio does it “every six months.”
“I would like to do Back to the Future: The Musical,” Zemeckis said. “Just like [Mel Brooks] did with The Producers. I would love to do that. I think that would be great.”
The filmmaker said he talked to the film studio about the musical but said, “They don’t get it. So there’s nothing I can do.”
Back to the Future was released in 1985, and the science fiction film starred Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover, and Thomas F. Wilson. The film revolves around Marty McFly accidentally traveling back in time, inadvertently preventing his future parents from falling in love and threatening his whole existence.
Back to the Future Part II was released in 1989, and a third installment premiered in 1990.
