‘Goonies 2’ Officially in the Works With Steven Spielberg Producing

“The Goonies” are officially back.
Warner Bros. has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel, it was announced Friday — almost 40 years after the original movie hit theaters back in 1985. Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original “Goonies” script. Lauren Shuler Donner will executive produce. There is no director attached to the sequel yet, and there are no plot details revealed yet.

Based on the popular web novel of the same name, “Omniscient Reader” will tell the story of Kim Dok Ja (Ahn Hyo Seop), who suddenly finds himself living in the world of a fantasy novel he was reading. Armed with the knowledge of what happened in the novel, Kim Dok Ja sets out to save the world from ending. Lee Min Ho stars as Yoo Joong Hyuk, the protagonist from the novel that Kim Dok Ja read.
The new trailer begins with Kim Dok Ja reading a line from the first chapter of the novel: “The subway stopped in the middle of Dongho Bridge.” The text then becomes reality—the subway that Kim Dok Ja is riding stops exactly as described in the novel, and he realizes, “This is the same as the start of that novel.”
After the bridge collapses, Kim Dok Ja has a dramatic meeting with the once fictional Yoo Joong Hyuk, who asks him, “What are you?” The action-packed trailer then goes on to show glimpses of its star-studded cast, which also includes Chae Soo Bin, Shin Seung Ho, Nana, and BLACKPINK’s Jisoo.
Meanwhile, the new poster for the film bears the tagline, “The world inside the novel becomes reality.”
“Omniscient Reader” will hit theaters in July 2025. In the meantime, check out the new trailer and poster for the film below!
