What started as a goofy, groundbreaking play that debuted inside the Sing Sing Correctional Facility — and then inspired the Golden Globe-nominated movie “Sing Sing” — will return to the stage, as the formerly incarcerated actors of the A24 film will reunite to perform “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code” live in New York.

The production will be staged on Feb. 3, off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop. The event will be hosted by “Succession” star J. Smith-Cameron and will include a post-performance Q&A with the cast and director of the original theater production, Brent Buell (played by Paul Raci in the film).

The revival of “Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code” will feature original cast members and special guest performers, including Clarence Maclin, Sean “Dino” Johnson, Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez, John “Divine G” Whitfield, Dario Peña, James “Big E” Williams, David “Dap” Giraudy, Miguel Valentin, Cornell “Nate” Alston, Camillo “Carmine” Lovacco, Mosi Eagle, Pedro Cotto, Patrick “Preme” Griffin and Cecily Lyn.

The event is presented by A24 in collaboration with The Just Trust and Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA), with the support of New York Theatre Workshop.

From director Greg Kwedar, “Sing Sing” stars Colman Domingo as John “Divine G” Whitfield, a man who is imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. He finds purpose, along with a group of other incarcerated men, through the prison’s Rehabilitation Through the Arts program. The film, which is based on a true story, cast many of the formerly incarcerated men from Sing Sing to play themselves.

In September, one of those actors, Velazquez, was exonerated of his wrongful murder conviction after serving nearly 24 years in prison. He began filming “Sing Sing” less than a year after he was released from the titular prison, calling the project “one of the most important things I’ve done in my life.”
