“Wicked” and “Conclave” were the big winners of the 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards on Thursday evening.

This was the guild’s second instance awarding “Wicked” designer Paul Tazewell. He won in 2021 for “Hamilton” in the excellence in variety, reality-competition or live television category. Tazewell has emerged as a frontrunner for the costuming Oscar. If he ends up winning, he will make history as the first Black man to win in the Academy category.

In the excellence in period film category, Linda Muir won for her work on “Nosferatu.”

The awards recognized excellence in film, TV and short-form costume design and were hosted by Jackie Tohn.

Tohn announced the guild is launching an auction of costumes from film and TV to support the IATSE Emergency Relief Fund. Among the props up for auction are costumes from “House of the Dragon,” Shiz University costumes from “Wicked,” and Bob Mackie Cher sketches.

Costume Designers Guild executive director Brigitta Romanov reminded the room about the power of unity. Romanov said, “When challenges arise, we do not stand alone. We stand together. This past year, that solidarity was put into action in ways that truly mattered, as Los Angeles faced devastating wildfires, unions across entertainment didn’t hesitate. The costume designer guild, along with the Teamsters, basic crafts, SAG AFTRA, the DGA, the WGA and so many others, came together to support the victims to remind our community that no one is forgotten in a time of crisis.”

Guild president Terry Ann Gordon added, “Resilience, fortitude and solidarity are hallmarks of our community.”

Janelle Monáe who received the Vanguard Spotlight award said, “I value being welcomed into this community. I love being a part of the non-binary community. I love being I love being transsexual.I love being a part of the LGBTQIA. I love my working-class parents and people like my grandmother, beautiful immigrants, cooking my food and cleaning our homes.” Monae continued, “I love the teachers teaching our kids. I love the laborers spending hours, days, weeks, months, making the costumes for us. I love them, so I want to dedicate this award to you. Our world will crumble without those people.”

Zoe Saldaña was honored with the Spotlight Award. During her speech, the actress thanked the guild and said, “You know certain actors have specific items that dictate your character, or they approach their character by having a clear idea of what they wear. That is not me. I am not a trained actor, and I spend most of my time preparing for a role by breathing into a paper bag, attempting not to completely panic.” Saldaña went on to say, “I think that’s why I so heavily rely on the work that you all do. I’ve always loved working with costume designers. I am a granddaughter and great-granddaughter and a daughter of seamstresses.”
