Racking up a record 13 nominations, Emilia Pérez has instantly become the must-see movie of January, even if you already saw it in theatres last year.
A musical crime-thriller written and directed by France’s Jacques Audiard, the film tells the story of a Mexican cartel leader who hopes to disappear by fleeing Mexico for gender confirmation surgery. At a time when gender identity is under attack in the States by Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, Emilia Pérez represents something of a triumph: star Karla Sofía Gascón has made Academy Awards history as the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar. Gascón is up for best actress, while the film also scored nominations for best picture, best director, best actress in a supporting role (Zoe Saldaña), cinematography, adapted screenplay, and international feature film.
The 13 nominations for Emilia Pérez are the most ever for an international film, breaking the record of 10 each for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Roma (2018).
Other films to come up big at this morning’s Oscars announcements for 2025 include the post-war period-drama The Brutalist starring Adrian Brody as a tortured architect, and the hit Broadway musical adaption Wicked, each walking away with 10 nominations.
Secwépemc filmmaker Julian Brave NoiseCat and Toronto-born journalist Emily Kassie received an Oscar nod for their documentary Sugarcane, which follows an investigation into abuse and missing children at a B.C. residential school near Sugar Cane reserve in Williams Lake, B.C.
Conan O’Brien will host the 97th Oscars, scheduled to take place March 2 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
