Franchise co-creator Ed Boon reveals how Mortal Kombat 2 plans to incorporate the franchise's iconic tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld, and how this raises the stakes for the plot. Following the critical and commercial failure of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, plans for another installment of the popular video game movie adaptation stagnated in development for years, before Simon McQuoid's Mortal Kombat reboot was released in 2021. The movie was a modest success, taking over $84 million against a budget of $55 million, and received mixed reviews, leading to the development of a sequel, Mortal Kombat 2.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Boon discussed how the upcoming movie will incorporate the iconic tournament between warriors from Earthrealm and Outworld, and the way the movie will symbolize this onscreen. He revealed that the score will be kept throughout the movie, and there will be a visual representation of this. Instead, the first film's storyline is set prior to the tournament taking place, and the showpiece event is set to make up the bulk of the second film.
