Nominated for two Oscars (Best International Feature and Best Animated Feature), this Latvian film is basically Noah’s Ark without Noah. A black cat, who lives alone in the remains of a cat-worshipping civilization, is forced to abandon his home amidst a cataclysmic flood. The feline ends up in a boat alongside a capybara, lemur, bird, and dog, who team up in search of dry land in spite of their obvious differences.

Director Gints Zilbalodis (Away) creates a visually dazzling spectacle, and the lack of dialogue (beyond the chirps, barks, and grunts of the animals) only deepens its spell.

How to watch: “Flow” is streaming on Hulu and Max.

Two highly-trained snipers from America and Russia (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, respectively) are posted on opposite sides of the titular gorge, standing guard against an unseen evil that lurks in its depths. Told they must never communicate, the pair nevertheless strike up a long-distance relationship through telescopes and non-verbal communication.

I’ll say upfront that not everything about this genre mishmash from Apple worked for me. What is an intriguing, high-concept hook never really coheres, with director Scott Derrickson never quite finding the right balance between romance, sci-fi, and action-adventure. There are specific elements (especially the score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) that made this one worth a watch, but don’t bump it to the top of your queue.

New Hampshire native Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” is a gorgeous work of gothic horror, faithfully updating the 1922 film of the same name about the horrifying vampire Count Orlock (Bill SkarsgĂ„rd) and his obsession with a young maiden (Lily-Rose Depp). Orlock has held power over Ellen since she was a teenager, and he grows in strength after luring her husband (Nicholas Hoult) to his manor.

Much like Eggers’ debut film “The Witch,” “Nosferatu” eschews cheap jump-scares in favor of atmospheric dread. Orlock’s maleficence spreads across the continent, bringing plague and pestilence despite the best efforts of an alchemist who specializes in the occult (Willem Dafoe). Depp steals the movie, giving one of the most shocking physical performances in recent memory. Not since Linda Blair in “The Exorcist” have you truly believed someone is possessed by the devil.

How to watch: “Nosferatu” is streaming on Peacock.

It seems like every time Western impresario Taylor Sheridan builds out a new spinoff to his smash hit “Yellowstone,” another one rides off into the sunset. Take “1923,” a prequel to “Yellowstone” and sequel to “1883,” which begins its second and final season this Sunday. Jacob and Cara Dutton (Harrison Ford, Helen Mirren) face a cruel winter at the family ranch; it’s a coin toss as to whether the harsh weather or bloodthirsty adversaries pose a bigger threat.

Ford and Mirren elevate this Great Plains soap, but you can understand why the duo will head for greener pastures at the end of this eight-episode season.

How to watch: “1923” Season 2 is streaming on Paramount+ starting Sunday, Feb. 23.

Heading into Season 3 of “Reacher,” there’s no longer any doubt that its hulking star Alan Ritchson has emerged from Tom Cruise’s shadow. Cruise was fun to watch as Jack Reacher, the ex-Army Major turned surly private eye. But Ritchson has made the role all his own, bringing some brawn to his investigations.

In the first two episodes of Season 3, Reacher is bouncing around New England, raising a ruckus in Maine and then searching for leads in Connecticut as he attempts to rescue a DEA informant. Adding to the local ties is former Brat Packer and Boston native Anthony Michael Hall, who joins the main cast this season as the owner of Oriental rug importer Bizarre Bazaar. (Imagine that one said with a Boston accent.)

How to watch: “Reacher” Season 3 is streaming on Prime Video.
