A Minecraft Movie’s nod to Nacho Libre wasn’t even intentional
Before Jack Black yearned for the mines in A Minecraft Movie, he was wrestling more than a chicken jockey… and it still shows.
Between Jack Black and Director Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie might remind you of some of their classic films. However, one crossover Easter egg wasn’t even intentional.
Black leads our new movie adventure into the real-life Overworld, starring as Steve, an adult who yearned for the mines and found himself stuck in the Nether.
Thankfully, he’s bailed out by a bunch of rag-tag outcasts who find the orb to open the portal. But, before they get back to life, they’ve gotta destroy the Piglins once and for all.
For Black, getting the upper hand doesn’t just mean dropping banger songs out of nowhere, but full-on wrestling his foes. If you think Minecraft reminds you of another classic movie, it wasn’t supposed to.
Minecraft director says Jack Black is born to be a wrestlerWarner Bros.
Black’s physical chops in A Minecraft Movie might remind you of Nacho Libre, the 2006 comedy where he played Ignacio, a cook who becomes a luchador to make more money. But speaking to Dexerto, director Jared Hess – who made both films – explains it was unintentional.
“Look, Jack is at his best when he’s doing Lucha Libre wrestling moves,” Hess explained. “I think his body looks amazing when he’s doing it, and it just it comes naturally to him. I think his fighting style is always going to be a wrestler. When he’s throwing down with some zombies or the chicken jockey, he’s just good.
While Steve initially comes to the group’s rescue by fighting off mobs in a turret, he later takes on a fully-fledged Illager ring, fighting the chicken jockey as a distraction.

“Obviously, people use stuntmen for this and Jack has a great stuntman who’s worked for a long time,” producer Torfi Orlafsson added.
”But when he’s fighting the zombies in one hand-held take, and he’s doing his karate kicks and punching them and tearing their arms off, that’s all Jack. He is incredibly agile, physical, and dangerous.”
“Jack Black is in my top five athletes of all time,” Hess joked.
Back in 2018, Black confirmed he wanted to make a Nacho Libre sequel. Appearing on the Jonathan Ross Show, Black said “I’ve always wanted to do another Nacho Libre,” also hinting he’d be up for more after the film’s initial release in 2006.
