A meaningful symbol: the hidden message in Prince Louis' photograph of Kate Middleton
The Princess of Wales has adopted a go-to poignant symbol since she announced the end of her chemotherapy last September
Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, recently shared a new portrait taken by Prince Louis to mark World Cancer Day – and once again there might just be a poignant hidden meaning
Kate Middleton has released a series of new photos to commemorate World Cancer Day, and royal watchers have noticed that the Princess of Wales seems to have embraced a poignant new symbol as she continues to recover from the disease.
The first photo was taken by Prince Louis, and Catherine’s youngest son has certainly followed in his mother’s footsteps. The photograph sees the Princess of Wales through the eyes of those closest to her: arms outstretched in a wintery forest scene, the sun shining through the trees behind her.
‘Don’t forget to nurture all that which lies beyond the disease,’ Catherine wrote alongside the photos, signing off with a ‘C’ to indicate that she herself wrote the message. The Princess of Wales has spoken movingly about how her experience with cancer last year led to a shift of priorities, spending more time with her family and embracing the healing powers of nature.
And it seems that the mother-of-three has adopted a new symbol as she enters this new era of her life. In both of the new photos that she has shared, the Princess has included ferns. The plant sits front of centre in the second snap that Catherine posted to her official social media account, which is said to have been taken by the Princess herself.
The second photograph, said to be taken by Catherine herself, features the symbolic fern
The symbolic meaning of the fern is especially poignant for Catherine. One of the oldest plants in the world, it is said to represent family bonds as well as endurance and resilience – apt after what Kate has called an ‘incredibly tough’ few months for her family – as well as new life and new beginnings.
When the Princess of Wales announced that she had completed her chemotherapy in September 2024, she reiterated this sense of refreshed purpose, writing: ‘Despite all that has gone before, I enter this new phase of recovery with a renewed sense of hope and appreciation of life.’ In January, the Princess disclosed that she was in remission.
These photographs aren’t the first time we’ve seen Kate Middleton turn to the fern for its symbolic import. On 10 October, she made an emotional return to royal duties while meeting with the families of the victims who were killed in the tragic Southport knife attacks. In this first public engagement since announcing that she has completed chemotherapy, The Princess of Wales offered consolation and compassion to those who lost loved ones in the knife attack, which took place at a children’s dance class in July.

And for such an emotional occasion, Catherine picked a deeply symbolic pair of earrings from her jewellery box, donning Gold Fern Drop Earrings from Catherine Zoraida. With their subtle sartorial messaging, the pieces were a truly thoughtful message, the designer herself explained.
‘Ferns are a symbol of endurance, resilience and new beginnings,’ Catherine Zoraida Blackwell told People at the time. ‘She’s so good at sending those thoughtful messages, and I love that about her. She’s so thoughtful and caring in every way.’

During her chemotherapy treatment last year, the Princess of Wales issued a rare statement about how important the outdoors had been for her while she recovered. In July 2024, Catherine posted a message on her Instagram stories in honour of a new project by the Natural History Museum, where she acts as patron.

‘I know the power of nature to support our development and wellbeing, both by bringing us joy and helping to keep us physically, mentally and spiritually healthy,’ she wrote.
And this January, on her first solo engagement since she announced her cancer diagnosis, Kate Middleton visited the Royal Marsden Hospital and offered further insight into just how important nature had been for her during chemotherapy, which she revealed she had undertaken at the London clinic.
‘I really felt like I needed to get the sun,’ she told a fellow patient. ‘You need loads of water and loads of sunlight.’
Sun, family, and a symbolic nod to new beginnings. This new year truly has been a positive one for Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
