Academy Award show viewership down 7% from 2024
Ratings for the 2025 Academy Awards presentation is down 7% from last year. Oscars viewership had been on the rise since 2020.
Viewership for Sunday’s Academy Awards presentation dropped about 7% from 2024.
Just over 18 million people tuned in to watch Conan O’Brien host the 97th presentation of Hollywood’s most glamorous award party, according to Nielsen. Despite airing on ABC and streaming on Hulu — where a scheduling system snafu caused programming to be interrupted with a couple major award categories yet to be announced.
The award presentation lasted nearly four hours and was dominated with wins by “Anora,” which took home five trophies, including one for best picture.
Last month’s Grammy Awards presentation saw a viewership drop of 8%. The Golden Globes, which covers television and film, commanded a smaller audience than the Academy Awards in January and saw its numbers drop slightly from the previous year.
Despite its diminished 2025 ratings, the Oscars remains TV’s most-watched awards show.
On the plus side for the Academy Awards, the big event appears to be attracting a younger audience. The program had its highest showing among adults aged 18-34, since 2020 on Sunday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Producers also learned Monday that comedian Chris Rock, who was smacked by Academy Award winning actor Will Smith on stage in 2022, hasn’t ruled out hosting the show again.
The question was asked of the 60-year-old funnyman outside Vanity Fair’s Sunday night Oscars party.
“The most miserable people on earth are people that can’t forgive,” he said. “And not just people, you have to forgive yourself sometimes. So, hey, you never know.”
It’s unlikely Smith will be back anytime soon. He was slapped with a 10-year ban from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences events.
After attracting a rock-bottom 10.4 million viewers in 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic caused theater lockdowns, the Oscar ceremony’s viewership climbed back steadily. Last year, 19.5 million viewers tuned in to watch “Oppenheimer” blow away the competition.
