Adolescence is airing on Netflix and the emotional drama follows the Miller family after their son Jamie (played by Owen Cooper) is arrested on suspicion of murder. Each episode follows a different stage of the process from the arrest through to Jamie facing the dock.
The final episode took place at Jamie's home, on the day of Eddie's (Stephen Graham) 50th birthday. While the family were trying to enjoy the special day, they faced constant reminders of the reality of the situation.
Eddie received a handmade card from Jamie, which reminded him of his son's absence during such a special time. Meanwhile, he also had to deal with some youngsters who had sprayed graffiti on the side of his van.
The finale took place 13 months after Jamie's arrest and everyone's emotions were still as raw as ever. His mother Mandy (Christine Tremarco) was keen to move out of Liverpool, driven to despair by the constant torment.
However, Eddie was determined to stay at the family home, not wanting to let the gossipers get the better of them. The family took a trip to a local DIY store to buy paint to cover up the graffiti when Eddie spotted the youths who had targeted his van.
Christine Tremarco as Mandy Miller and Stephen Graham as Eddie MillerIn a fit of rage, he grabbed one of them by the scruff of the neck, clearly not taking Jamie's 'incarceration' well. If this wasn't enough, on the way home from the store, Jamie called to wish his dad a happy birthday.
However, he delivered some heartbreaking news when he told his dad he wanted to change his plea to guilty, admitting to killing Katie. With hard evidence stacked up against him, he clearly felt it would be best to own up to his actions.
Of course, his parents and sister were devastated, and they had an emotional conversation about whether their parenting techniques could have contributed to Jamie's actions.
They decided it was in fact for the best that Jamie changed his plea, in the hope he would be given some leniency further down the line.
The series ends before Jamie's ultimate fate was revealed, but it can be assumed he attended his sentencing, where he would have been given a life sentence.
Jamie changed his plea to guiltyA mandatory life sentence is imposed when a young person is convicted or pleads guilty to murder.
The starting point for determining the minimum sentence where the offender is under 18 years of age is 12 years.
Opening up on the final episode, Stephen Graham said: "It’s the episode where Eddie and Manda ask themselves questions about their accountability as parents and how much they’re responsible for ‘making’ Jamie.
"Deep down, Eddie has always been thinking, ‘It’s my fault. Ok I tried everything I could. I did all the things that a dad should and could do with a boy.’
"Eddie had taken Jamie to football, to boxing, but somehow it didn’t click. He would have loved it if his boy wanted to be an electrician and maybe join the family business but it’s probably not going to happen.
"But when Jamie wants a computer, it’s ‘OK, let’s get him a computer, maybe that will spark an interest in IT, there’s a lot of money in computers.’ But did Eddie and Manda have any idea what Jamie was doing when he was on that computer alone in his bedroom? No. But, then, does any parent really know?"
