Adrien Brody has responded to criticism over a surprising and widely criticised moment at the 2025 Oscar's.
The 51-year-old actor won his second Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Brutalist, beating other nominees such as Timothée Chalamet, Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, and Ralph Fiennes.
As his name was announced, Adiren was emotional as he walked up to the stage. But as he made his way up, he turned around, took a piece of gum out of his mouth, and threw it towards his girlfriend, Georgina Chapman. Georgina, who is Harvey Weinstein's ex-wife, was seen trying to catch the gum before Adrien began his speech. The moment upset many viewers.
However, Adrien defended his actions in an interview on Live with Kelly and Mark. "I could've swallowed it, but I didnât think about that," he said. "I had to get rid of it somehow." Georgina later admitted that she didnât catch the gum. Despite the backlash, Adriend's win was a big achievement in his career, with his first Oscar win coming in 2003 for The Pianist.
Adriend was also heavily criticised for his "rude" acceptance speech at the Oscars last night. During his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Leading Role accolade at the Academy Awards, Adrien called for a "healthier, happier and more inclusive world" as he reflected on his own achievements. Adrien was met with applause for his speech at Los Angeles' Dolby Theater, despite his words being cut short when music played.
"Thank you God. Thank you for this blessed life. If I may just humbly begin by giving thanks for the tremendous outpouring of love that I've felt from this world and every individual that has treated me with respect and appreciation. I feel so fortunate," he said.
"Acting is a very fragile profession. It looks very glamorous and in certain moments it is but the one thing I've gained in having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective." He added: "No matter where you are in your career and what you've accomplished, it an all go away and I think what makes this night most special is the awareness of that and the gratitude I have to still do the work that I love.
"Winning an award like this, it signifies a destination and something my character references in the film, but to me it also, beyond the pinnacle of a career it is a chance to begin again and the opportunity to hopefully be fortunate enough that the next 20 years of my life I am worthy of such meaningful and important, relevant roles."
