Alex Jones says new Netflix drama is 'most gripping hour of TV ever'
The One Show presenter heaped praise on Stephen Graham's new four-part series Adolescence

Welsh TV presenter Alex Jones has revealed that she thinks a brand-new Netflix drama is the "best hour of telly" she's ever seen. Speaking on the Binge! podcast, which she co-hosts with McFly's Harry Judd, Alex said Adolescence, a four-part series about a 13-year-old boy being accused of murder, had completely gripped her.
The series hit Netflix on Thursday, March 13, and marks actor Stephen Graham's writer debut. Known for his roles in Line of Duty and A Thousand Blows, Stephen also appears in Adolescence as the concerned father of Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), a teenager arrested for the murder of a girl who goes to his school.
The new Netflix series has been praised widely and recognised for each episode being filmed in one continuous shot. With no editing or re-dos, the four-part limited series unfolds in real time from the time of arrest as we follow detectives investigating the shocking crime. Alex says this created an "uncomfortable" atmosphere that she simply couldn't look away from.
Speaking on the podcast, The One Show host said: "It is the most gripping hour of television I've ever seen. It's filmed in one shot. it's a continuous shot that feels so uncomfortable and it's about a 13-year-old boy being accused of murder.
"By all accounts, he's a nice little boy and you don't know what's happened. He's questioned, put in a cell and his parents aren't allowed to be with him - it is horrific because what you are thinking is, this can happen to anybody. It's honestly the best hour of telly I've ever seen that first episode."
Harry couldn't seem to believe "the whole thing" was shot in one go. Adolescence is directed by Philip Barantini, who used a similar continuous one-shot style in the 2021 BAFTA nominated film Boiling Point, which also starred Stephen Graham.
As well as Stephen, the cast is filled with British TV stars. Top Gun and A Thousand Blow's Ashley Walters portrays DI Luke Bascombe and Erin Doherty, who is best known for appearing as Princess Anne in The Crown but also starred in Disney's A Thousand Blows alongside her co-stars, plays Briony Ariston. Filming began in the UK in July 2024 and finished around October. Speaking to RadioTimes about the show, Graham said: “The idea came as – over the past 10 years or so – we’ve seen an epidemic of knife crime amongst young lads, up and down the country. And for me, there were certain instances that really stuck out where young boys – and they are young boys, you know, they're not men – were killing young girls.
"When I mentioned it to Phil, it just really hit me hard. I just thought, 'Why? What's going on? What's happening? Why is this the case?' What's going on with our society as a whole, as a collective, and without being disrespectful, when these things are on the news – and we’re a couple of kids from council estates – but when these things are on the news, your judgement instantly goes to blaming the family, you blame the mum and dad.
"We’re all guilty of it, because that's the easy common denominator. I just thought, ‘What if that's not the case at all?’"
