Anas Sarwar's speech marks the new direction Scottish Labour has been needing

A valid criticism of Scottish Labour’s strategy for over a decade is they have been too obsessed with the SNP. Successive leaders have banged on about the failings of the SNP without presenting a positive alternative.
Anas Sarwar buried that lop-side approach at the Scottish Labour conference in Glasgow. Sarwar has said Scotland needs a “new direction” but the slogan also applied to his own party and he has delivered.
Most conference speeches are top heavy with the sort of rhetoric and point scoring that turns off voters. Sarwar’s address attempted to set out the dividing lines at the Holyrood election with a blitz of policies.
If he becomes First Minister, he will ban mobile phones in school, scrap peak rail fares, focus on kids who do not go to university and back new nuclear reactors.
His speech also pointedly ditched the duff claim that the SNP’s entire 18 years in office have been a disaster. Voters backed the SNP over Labour at four successive elections and so rubbishing this near two decade stretch was an insult to Scots.
In its place, Sarwar said the SNP had got some things right, but had run out of road. It is a more accurate, nuanced and effective message than laying waste to everything achieved by four Nationalist First Ministers.
Sarwar also developed a message voters can expect to hear incessantly in the next fourteen months. He will portray John Swinney as a man of the past while promoting himself as a young and energetic clean pair of hands.
David Cameron’s brutal line about Tony Blair - "you were the future once" - could easily be exported to the Holyrood election.
If the 2026 election is determined on the basis of the SNP’s record in office, Scottish Labour will easily win. Public services are in a state of disrepair, economic growth is sluggish and high profile projects have been disastrously mishandled.
But there is now a competing narrative - the poor start of Keir Starmer’s Government. Voters will either use the Holyrood election to cast judgement on the Scottish Government or the Starmer administration.
Sarwar’s dream of becoming First Minister depends on voters looking to Edinburgh, not London.
