Anthony Henry Recalls EVOLVE Working With NXT, Getting Signed By WWE | Fightful News

Anthony Henry was a staple in EVOLVE beginning in 2017, eventually forming The WorkHorsemen with JD Drake and becoming one of the top tag teams on the independent scene.
In 2015, WWE formed a partnership with EVOLVE, leading to various NXT talent appearing on shows and EVOLVE talent doing extra work on NXT.

āAt the time, Evolve had started working with NXT. There were NXT talents coming in to do these shows and that was definitely helping out with attendance, basically the NXT guys would wrestle the Evolve guys. We worked up to the point where we did a Evolve show on the WWE Network and I was a part of that," Henry recalled on AEW Unrestricted.
āI came in for some NXT stuff; I was kind of, in essence, getting looked at; guys like Austin Theory were already there and getting in there and things like that. I was like, okay, I kind of see where this is going, Evolve guys are kinda headed that way. I came to an NXT show, was supposed to do some work, and I was speaking to the doctors. I was very honest with the doctors in answering questions, as I normally am. The doctors became a little bit more suspect, like, āSo youāve been hit, youāve had a concussion?ā Iām like, āWell, Iām a wrestler, yes. I donāt know many that havenāt. Iām not saying I have a history of it but yeah, Iāve been hit, for sure.ā It became, we donāt want to use you and now weāre no longer interested in signing you. Also, I get a call from Gabe the next day. Iām not throwing Gabe under the bus or anything, he did what he thought he had to do, he calls me and heās telling me the situation and this is what they said. Iām like, āOkay.ā Obviously Iām let down, but then he hits me with, āI donāt think I can use you anymore either at Evolve cause weāre doing this now and weāre connected. If I use you, then I donāt want to be looked as like Iām using someone who is a liability I guess.ā He was beat up about it, he didnāt want to, but I understood his position I guess, he needed the job," he said.
Henry continued, āAt that point, I didnāt even know if I wanted to wrestle. Youāve also got to take into fact that COVID hit right after this. So then, COVID hits and thereās no wrestling at all. Iām hit with this news, COVID hits, I canāt wrestle on the indies. Iām just kind of like, Iām gonna do a few indie bookings when they started coming back, but that might be it, Iām probably gonna retire. I think I even put it out on social media.ā
Henry was eventually signed in 2021, debut as Asher Hale.
āNear the end of 2020, I get a phone call from Gabe and Gabeās like, āHey, do you still want to retire?ā Iām like, āDepends.ā Heās like, āWould you want to come in and do this thing for WWE?ā Itās a tryout but it wasnāt really a tryout, itās basically, youāre getting signed. I didnāt even want to do it, I honestly wanted to be like, āScrew you, I donāt care, I donāt wanna do it.ā My wife was like, āNope, you should do it. If you donāt do it, youāre gonna beat yourself up and youāre gonna be really mad.ā Thanks to my wife, I did it. It was a tryout but it was really just a bunch of indie wrestlers and as long as we didnāt do anything stupid or mess anything up, we were getting signed. Now, I will say, out of like 12 of us, I think four of us ended up getting signed," he recalled.
Henry was released by WWE in August 2021. He is currently signed to ROH, but is sidelined with a bicep injury.
