As Technicolor Flounders, VFX artists at The Mill U.S. Start A New Chapter With Dream Machine FX (EXCLUSIVE)
As Technicolor Flounders, VFX artists at The Mill U.S. have joined forces with Dream Machine FX to launch Arc Creative.
Amid financial difficulties, Technicolor â which includes leading VFX brands MPC (âMufasaâ) and short form VFX banner The Mill â has started to shut down parts of the company. But the creative leadership and âpractically the entire creative staffâ of what was Technicolorâs The Mill U.S. has pivoted and is joining forces with Dream Machine FX to launch a new venture, Arc Creative.
âThis past Friday, we were collectively informed that after 35 years of groundbreaking artistry, The Mill would be closing its doors this Monday [Feb. 24]â a casualty of the many years of Technicolorâs well-publicized financial struggles,â the more than 100 artists formerly of The Mill U.S. explained in a joint statement to Variety. âIt was a moment that stopped us in our tracks. It goes without saying, the past few days have been filled with emotions: shock, anger, sorrow, concern, and ultimately, resolve. While The Mill as we know it has shut its doors, its spirit, its passion, and its legacy live on through its amazing and talented people. After all, it was always the people that made The Mill truly special.â
Dream Machine FX is a group holding company for VFX brands Important Looking Pirates (whose recent credits include âShogunâ), Fin (credits include âThe Creatorâ), Zero VFX (âChallengersâ) and Mavericks VFX (âThe Handmaidâs Taleâ). Arc Creative will launch with a primary focus on short-form work including high-end advertising, game cinematics and trailers.

In the statement, the artists said that with Arc Creative, they aim to build something new and âworthy of the trust our clients have placed in us and worthy of being the kind of creative home that The Mill has long provided for the most talented artists in the industry. The Millâs DNA was built on two core values: delivering creative excellence time and time again, and fostering an environment where creatives could thrive. We believe Dream Machine is the perfect partner for us to carry that forward, led by industry friends and collaborators weâve known for decades.â
The statement explains they are aiming for âas smooth a transition as possibleâ though âthe complexities of Technicolorâs Chapter 7 proceedings may pose challenges, but alongside our partners at Dream Machine, we will do everything in our power to protect the talent and trust that have defined us for decades.â
Arc Creativeâs team include The Mill U.S.âs executive creative directors, Robert Sethi and Gavin Wellsman, and managing directors Angela Lupo and Anastasia von Rahl. Its creative directors include Ilya Abulkhavov, James Allen, Jimmy Bullard, David Lawson, John Leonti, Tom Mccullough and Thiago Porto.
The team includes VFX supervisors Antoine Douadi, Anthony Jones, Eva Kuehlmann, Yarin Manes, Nhat Tran, Graeme Turnbull, as well as well as nine executive producers and ten heads of departments including 2D and 3D.
âWe have always held The Mill in the highest regard and the shutting of its doors is a sad day for the entire industry,â said David Li, chairman of Dream Machine. âThe Mill U.S. has always stood as both a force of creativity and a bastion for some of the most creative minds in our industry. We are humbled that Robert, Gavin, Anastasia and Angela came to us to start this next chapter and we are excited to support all of the talented individuals who are working together to continue The Millâs legacy and build Arc Creative. We enthusiastically welcome them to the Dream Machine family.â
The Mill had bases in Los Angeles and New York, and the team is currently working to secure space in both of those cities.
Technicolorâs troubles bring to an end the run of The Mill, which was founded in London during 1990 and was a leading VFX company dedicated to commercial and other advertising work, having won countless awards including Cannes Lions, Clios and Visual Effects Society Awards. Earlier in its time, The Mill also completed some feature work, notably as the lead VFX house for 2000âs VFX Oscar winner âGladiator.â
