The Scots actor and comedian told how he suffered from crippling anxiety after being picked on almost every day by older pupils.

Gadd, from Wormit in Fife, said he was taunted at primary school over a birthmark he had on his head which has since faded.

The 35-year-old was badly beaten up on the school bus one day after standing up to one of the bullies.

Gadd has been catapulted to worldwide fame after writing the drama, which has been viewed by more than 240 million people on Netflix and won a Golden Globe award earlier this month.

Baby Reindeer depicts the story of a stalker who harassed Gadd over a number of years.

The seven-part series is inspired by Gadd's 2019 Edinburgh Fringe show of the same name.

Speaking about his early life on US comedian Marc Maron's WTF podcast, Gadd said: "School could be tough in places. I definitely grew up in a neighbourhood where masculinity was at the forefront.

"The school was a state comprehensive and in my early years I was picked on quite badly there.

"I had a birthmark on my head, which has actually faded, and it was the shape of Africa. They would call me 'tea stain' because it was like I had dropped a tea bag on my head.

"It got to the point where they were singing songs about me on the bus and stuff like that. They would sing mean songs and I would sit at the front.

"I always remember coming back on the school bus and thinking 'I hope they don't sing about me today'. I would start to hear singing but then realise they weren't singing so my anxiety was so great that I had started to hear the singing.

US judge makes huge call on Baby Reindeer case and Fiona Harvey given green light to sue Netflix

"That's when I realised things had actually got quite bad with the bullying."

He added: "This one guy gave me a hard time day in and day out and I remember going home sitting with my sister coming up with something I could say to him the next day.

"I decided to say 'At least when I go on holiday I don't have to drop my mum off at the kennels,' which is obviously not the right thing to say.

"There was about six years between us and he went right to the front of the bus and beat the hell out of me."

'REAL-LIFE' BABY REINDEER STALKER HOUNDS KEIR STARMER

Fiona Harvey sent the Labour leader a staggering 276 messages in less than eight months, including vicious attacks on him and his family.

She told Sir Keir he was in a “non-job ”, was a “stupid little boy” and a “useless barrister”.

The emails - from two separate email addresses - were among hundreds forwarded on by Ms Harvey to The Scottish Sun over a period of several years.

Like those seen in the show, all are in a trademark style, littered with punctuations and spelling mistakes, with few full stops and a line space between each sentence.

All were signed off “Sent from my iPhone” — echoing Martha, who it turns out in the show doesn’t have an iPhone.

A Scottish woman who claims to be the inspiration for the Martha character in Baby Reindeer is suing Netflix over her depiction in the show.

Fiona Harvey is seeking damages of more than £130 million over claims the series falsely depicted her as a convicted criminal who spent time in prison for stalking.

Netflix has vowed to "defend this matter vigorously".

After his Fringe success, Gadd later took the show to London's West End and won an Olivier Award.

As well as his stand-up career, he has also acted in TV shows including Outlander and Code 404 and wrote an episode of Netflix series Sex Education.
