Bay Village Police offering free self defense course for women: Short Takes on the Westshore

Taught by law enforcement officials, the Bay Village Police Department is offering a self-defense course for females ages 16 and older.
Women’s self-defense course in 2022 with Bay Village Detective Kelly Uber as the instructor with Officer Mike Flood as assistant instructor, showing how to break free in dangerous situations.
The free, 12-hour, course will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. May 5, 7, 12 and 14, at the police station, 28000 Wolf Road. Participants are required to attend all four sessions. Participants will learn how to react to potentially dangerous physical encounters.

Art show: Artists Karen Petkovic, Jessica Wascak, Rebecca Yody, Hadley K. Conner, and Barbara Merritt explore the physical and emotional landscape in a collaborative show featuring work created individually that shares a common theme of beauty resonating from a vacant space at the Sullivan Family Gallery at BAYarts, 28795 Lake Road.
An opening reception will take from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 13. The show runs Feb. 13-March 7.

Shout-out: Last month, Bay High School alumnus Kyle Cusimano (Class of 2020) was named one of 15 men’s semifinalists for the 2024 Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I Soccer. The finalist list was based on voting by NCAA Division I men’s soccer coaches.
Cusimano was the 2024 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Defensive Player of the Year, and also was named to the All-MVC First Team. Additionally, Cusimano was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete Second Team, and also was selected to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.

College admission trends: The Rocky River City School District is hosting a Town Hall event titled, “College Admissions Unlocked: Critical Insights for Families and Students in 2025,” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at Rocky River High School, 20951 Detroit Road.
Presented by Estrela Consulting, topics discussed will include college admissions trends, standardized testing updates, how AP and CCP impact admissions decisions, FAFSA review, financial aid considerations, and calculators, as well as time for Q&A.

Tax prep assistance: Seniors can sign up for an appointment for tax preparation assistance through the AARP tax aide program at Westlake Community Services.
The taxpayer(s) financial situation must be limited as follows: Your total income must be limited to no more than 10 income forms, including (a) Forms W-2 relating to employment, (b) Form 1099R relating to retirement income; (c) Form SSA-1099 for Social Security, and (d) Forms 1099 for interest and dividend forms.
If you have investment income, such as capital gain, interest, and the like, the form must be limited to a Consolidated Form 1099 Statement. The taxpayer cannot have individual investment transactions to report. You should ensure that the above limitations apply to your financial situation before an appointment is scheduled as a return will not be prepared for you if any of the limitations do apply, and this could result in you having trouble securing an appointment with a paid preparer to timely complete your tax return, according to information from Community Services.
Appointments are from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, beginning Feb. 3 and continuing through April 10 (no appointments Feb. 17).

Founders’ Day: The Westlake Council of PTAs will host its annual Founders’ Day Celebration Feb. 27 at LaCentre Conference and Banquet Facility, 25777 Detroit Road.
The evening is a celebration of the outstanding individuals who have dedicated their time and talents toward improving the Westlake City Schools and community by exceeding the mission and purpose of the PTA, according to the council.
The event will kick off at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour and cash bar. Dinner will be served at 6:45 p.m.
Tickets are $40 and also include nonalcoholic beverages. Deadline to register is Feb. 20.
