Scammer Belle Gibson became well-known after claiming to have healed her brain cancer through natural treatments – but was later exposed as a fraud.
It was later discovered that she had made up her illness and failed to donate money she promised to charity. Because of this, she was fined $410,000 (£205,000) for deceiving the public. As of February 2025, Belle has stayed mostly out of the public eye. Despite being fined, reports say she still hasn't paid the amount, and authorities are continuing to pursue the debt.
Belle's story has been turned into a Netflix drama called Apple Cider Vinegar, which recounts her rise in the wellness industry and eventual fall from grace. The show explores how wellness culture can be misleading and the impact influencers can have on their followers. It tells the real-life tale of the Australian fraudster portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, who faked a brain tumour diagnosis and used it to promote her app, The Whole Pantry.

NETFLIX)The brand provided recipes and advice for terminally ill individuals, with Belle leveraging her extensive social media following to advocate alternative treatments over legitimate therapies. She pledged that her brand's profits would go to various charities, but instead, they funded her extravagant lifestyle.
Journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano eventually unmasked Belle, first for her false charity pledges and then for her bogus cancer diagnosis. They penned a book about their investigations, titled The Woman Who Fooled the World.
In a 2015 interview, Belle confessed to concocting the entire story, leading to legal repercussions for allegedly violating Australian consumer law. In September 2017, Belle was slapped with a $410,000 fine for making false claims about her charitable donations.
As of April 2019, Belle hadn't paid the fine, leading authorities to think about charging her with contempt of court. She faced the possibility jail time if she didn't show up in court in May, according to the Mirror US. But, by September 2019, Belle still hadn't paid, and Consumer Affairs Victoria kept working to collect the fine.

60 Minutes Australia/Youtube)Back in 2017, Belle landed herself in hot water and, according to a letter subsequently disclosed by the Federal Court, she was buried under a debt of $170,000 (£85,000), with only $5,000 (£2,500) to her name. Her property became a frequent target for the Sheriff's Office, which carried out raids, including the latest in May 2021, to retrieve items for recovering unpaid fines.
Many have wondered if Belle ended up in prison, but in reality, she managed to avoid it. It’s unclear if Belle has paid off the remaining fines, but she hasn’t faced jail time as part of her punishment. Reports emerged that her partner, Clive Rothwell (played by Ashley Zukerman), chipped in to cover her legal expenses and provided financial backing for some time following the scandal.
