Beloved comedian, actor reveals sexuality posthumously in documentary
Pee-wee Herman actor reveals he kept sexuality secret to protect career.
LOS ANGELES, California — Paul Reubens’ sexuality was the subject of speculation for years before his death from cancer in July 2023.
Now Reubens, who became a star in the 1980s with his portrayal of the Pee-wee Herman character, has used an upcoming documentary to confirm that he was homosexual but kept his sexuality secret so that it would not adversely affect his career, reports say.
“I was as out as you could be, and then I went back in the closet,” Reubens says in the documentary, according to USA Today. “My career would have absolutely suffered if I was openly gay, so I went to great lengths for many, many years to keep it a secret.”
The documentary is a two-part HBO film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, the New York Post reports. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the documentary comes from 40 hours of interviews of Reubens with director Matt Wolf.
Reubens says he was in a relationship with a man named Guy when his career began to take off. He talks of later visiting Guy, who was in a hospital dying of AIDS.
“To talk about seeing someone at death’s door … he probably died a couple hours after that,” Reubens said.
“I hid behind an alter ego,” he said. “I spent my entire adult life hiding I was a huge weed head. I was secretive about my sexuality even to my friends (out of) self-hatred or self-preservation. I was conflicted about sexuality, but fame was way more complicated.”
He said his parents were accepting when he told them of his sexuality and his father wrote him a supportive letter, USA Today reports.
“Son, if you’re homosexual, I want you to know that I hope you can be the greatest homosexual you can be,” his father wrote in the letter.
Reubens developed the Pee-wee character while a member of the comedy group comedy The Groundlings in the late 1970s, according to his IMDB profile. The character grew in popularity over the years, thanks in part to several appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman.”
It was the release of the 1985 movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” directed by Tim Burton, that made the Pee-wee character a household name. The movie was an unexpected hit and it led to Reubens getting a Saturday morning children’s show, “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” in 1986.
The TV show featured appearances by several actors who would later go on to bigger fame, including Laurence Fishburne as Cowboy Curtis and Phil Hartman as Captain Carl.
The show ended in 1991 when Reubens was accused of masturbating in a cinema while watching an X-rated film. He rarely appeared as Pee-wee Herman following the arrest until the film “Pee-wee’s Big Holiday” in 2016.
However, he did get roles in other films, including a small role in “Batman Returns” and as a vampire in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” both in 1992. He also did voice work in several animated TV shows and films.
