Beyoncé! Kylie Minogue! Bob Marley! King Charles reveals his favourite songs in a Commonwealth Day playlist, including one pop classic that always gets him dancing
His Royal Highness shared his ‘music for dancing’ in a playlist released with Apple Music to mark Commonwealth Day, offering his verdict on stars such as Beyoncé and Kylie Minogue
King Charles has revealed some of his favourite songs to mark Commonwealth Day, with a list of tunes by Beyoncé (who he met at Capital FM's Party In The Park for the Prince's Trust in 2003), Kylie Minogue, and Bob Marley, among others

Which artists made it onto his Majesty’s mixtape? Kylie Minogue received a special mention from King Charles, who selected the King’s trust ambassador’s 1987 hit Locomotion and admitted that he finds it ‘incredibly hard to sit still’ when he hears the tune. ‘This is music for dancing,’ said the 76-year-old monarch, adding that the song ‘has that infectious energy which makes it, I find, incredibly hard to sit still!’
While 15 of the 17 tracks come from Commonwealth artists (including Australian Kylie), there were two American singers whose songs King Charles seemed to enjoy too much to leave off the playlist, adding two bonus songs to the mix.

The singer is, King Charles said, ‘one of the Trust’s most faithful supporters.’ He went on to congratulate Beyoncé on her historic Album of the Year award at the Grammys in February for Cowboy Carter, the first time she won the accolade.

‘When I was much younger, it was absolutely impossible not to get up and dance when it was played,’ he said. ‘So, I wonder if I can still just manage it...?!’
King Charles is no stranger to the dancefloor, showcasing a range of moves over the decades. In 1985, he tried his hand at breakdancing during a Prince’s Trust event. While the future King looked somewhat out of place in his suit and tie, he demonstrated admirable commitment, swaying his way to his knees as the dancers watched on. Further adventures in shape cutting have come on trips to Brazil and Argentina, which saw the King join in with some samba and Cha Cha Cha.

The playlist is packed with songs from over ten centuries and five continents, revealing Charles’s eclectic taste across a host of genres, including Afrobeats, disco, pop, reggae, and Calypso. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa from New Zealand, Canadian Michael Bublé, and South African singer Miriam Makeba all feature, as do British star Raye (fresh from her Grammys performance) and Jamaican icon Grace Jones.
The King also reveals his admiration for Could You Be Loved by Bob Marley, who is praised by the King for his ‘marvellous, infectious energy … but also his deep sincerity and his profound concern for his community.’
His Royal Higness added: ‘I always recall his words ‘The people have a voice inside of them”. He gave the world that voice in a way that no one who heard can ever forget.’
The King praised Raye for her song Love Me Again in a video released alongside his playlist of personal favourites
Chris Jackson/Getty ImagesKing Charles is said to have consulted his friends for suggestions as he curated his playlist, which he talked through on a video for Apple Music. Filming in his private office at Buckingham Palace, the 18th Century room, King Charles was a ‘one-take wonder’, proving that all those King’s Speeches have taught him a thing or two about public speaking.
His Royal Highness is set to celebrate Commonwealth Day in person on 10 March, joining Queen Camilla, Prince William, the Princess of Wales, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester for a service of appreciation at Westminster Abbey. The occasion – which is this year themed ‘Together We Thrive’ – will mark his return to Commowealth Day festivities, with both the King and the Princess of Wales unable to attend in 2024 due to their cancer treatments.
