Trace Cyrus has claimed that his country singer father, Billy Ray Cyrus, has threatened him with legal after an impassioned plea on social media for him to get help.
There have been concerns since Billy, 63, who is best known for Achy Breaky Heart, delivered a performance at Donald Trump's inauguration which was described as a "trainwreck".
Trace, 35, who is brother to Miley and Noah Cyrus, posted a statement on Instagram in which he reached out directly to his father. The singer wrote: "Dad my message was beyond loving. I could have been extremely honest about a lot more but I don't want to put your business out there like that. But for you to threaten me with legal action for wanting you to get help is a disgrace."
Trace then referenced his paternal grandfather as he continued his plea. He wrote in the message in which he tagged his father: "Pappy is looking down at you with such disappointment I can assure you. You should be ashamed of yourself. I will always love you but I no longer respect you as a man. Everyone close to you is terrified to tell you how they really feel. I'm not. Get help."

Trace then took to the comments on his post to make another plea, this time to fans of his father. He asked: "Send my dad some words of encouragement guys!! I have faith the man we all once knew is still in there somewhere. We gotta get him back."
The Instagram post was not the only post to try and get his father to concede to his request. Trace then added a couple of throwback pics on his Instagram Stories, as he lamented his relationship with his father.

One of the photos showed Trace walking with his dad in a field, which he captioned: "Father's Day 2022." The singer then added: "I'd say this was the last good day I had with my dad." The other photo shows Billy Ray receiving a vaccination and on his black T-shirt, it reads, "Jesus is my Booster." Trace commented across the photo: "Ohhh the irony."
Trace, who was adopted at age four after Billy Ray married in mother Tish, in 1993, then commented on his post: "For all of you wondering no I still haven't heard from my dad. He did contact a family member to let me know he's taking legal action against me for encouraging him to get help. Dad I live 30 minutes away from your. You could've just come & talked to me like a man."
On Thursday, Trace had also shared his feelings on his father, thanking him for adopting him when he was aged four. He wrote: "Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever. i wanted to be just like you. The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life."
Trace continued: "Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it's become obvious to everyone but you."
Preempting the response from his father, Trace added: "You may be upset with me for posting this. I really could care less at this point. Me and the girls have been genuinely worried about you for years but you've pushed all of us away."
