Blake Lively Thanks ‘Sweet Husband’ Ryan Reynolds in Impassioned Speech Amid Justin Baldoni Legal Battle
Reynolds was seen giving Lively a pep talk before her emotional speech, which alluded to the ongoing legal battle with Baldoni.
Last night, Blake Lively gave an impassioned speech at the Time100 Gala.
Though Lively has attended multiple events throughout the ongoing legal battle with Justin Baldoni, her first public allusion to the ensuing discourse came at the event honoring Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people. Lively, one of the evening’s honorees, prefaced her speech with an acknowledgment of the discourse before focusing on her biggest influence: her mother, Willie Elain McAlpin.
“I have so much to say about the last two years of my life, but tonight is not the forum,” she told her audience. “What I will speak to, separately, is the feeling of being a woman who has a voice today.”
In her speech, which can be watched in full here, Lively revealed her mother had survived “the worst crime someone can commit against a woman.” Though she says her mother “never got justice from her work acquaintance who attempted to take her life” before Lively was born, the actor says her mother was “saved” by an unnamed woman who shared a similar story on the radio.
“The woman painfully and graphically shared how she escaped. And because of hearing that woman speak about her experience instead of shutting down in fear and unfair shame, my mom is alive today,” Lively said. “She was saved by a woman whose name she’ll never know. I am alive and standing here with you all today, being honored, because of a woman whose name I’ll never know. I am here, my mom is here, because that woman not only survived, but she told others how. I am here, my mom is here, because that woman not only survived, but she told others how.”
Lively continued, “It’s a silent torch of womanhood that we come to know—a pact that privately, we must show others how to survive, literally or spiritually. We don’t let our daughters know, but one day, we break their hearts by letting them in on the secret that we kept from them as they pranced around in princess dresses: that they are not and will likely never be safe at work, at home, in a parking lot, in a medical office, online, in any space they inhabit, physically, emotionally, professionally.”
Lively went on to ask, “But why does that torch have to be our burden to carry in private? How can we not all agree on that basic human right?”

“I know the superpower of female triumph though,” Lively rounded out her speech. “I have touched it, shaken hands with it. I’m looking at it in this room here right now. These are the happy endings we must see as women and girls. We can make it to the end alive, physically or emotionally, and we will and we do, and we thrive. Even when it doesn’t feel possible. Even when we are in sharp pain. Never underestimate a woman’s ability to endure pain.”
Toward the end of her speech, Lively also took a moment to thank “every man, including my sweet husband, who are kind and good when no one is watching.”
Of course, plenty of people were watching when Reynolds seemingly gave his wife a few words (and kisses) of encouragement moments before she took the mic.
Back in December 2024, Lively went public with a lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, accusing the It Ends With Us director and actor of sexual harassment and crafting a smear campaign to “destroy” her career. Baldoni has since countersued Lively and Reynolds for defamation, further accusing the pair of engaging in “bullying and threats to take over the movie.”
The entire drama has sparked a wave of intense public backlash, largely aimed at Lively and Reynolds. However, while attending the SNL50 anniversary special with his wife, the Deadpool star appeared to joke about the ongoing drama.
During an audience Q&A with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, Reynolds was asked how it’s going. “Great,” he replied nervously, though that was clearly a part of the bit. “Why? What have you heard?”
As for Baldoni’s family, his wife and mother have both spoken out in praise of the former Jane the Virgin star following the lawsuits, which are set to go to trial in March 2026.
And while the Gossip Girl alum has not publicly commented on the lawsuits since her initial statement to The New York Times in December, a source recently told People that Blake Lively has “no regrets” about going public with her accusations.
“She knew there would be backlash, and she prepared herself for how mentally and emotionally difficult it would be,” the source said. “But she can’t go through life knowing she didn’t stand up to something she believed was wrong.”
The source continued, “As a mom, she never wants her daughters to stay silent in the face of injustice. Right now she’s taking it one day at a time and staying focused on her No. 1 priority: her family.”
