Bob Dylan turned down chance to be at Oscars so younger Mick Jagger 'stood in'
The Rolling Stones legend, 81, let slip that he was second choice to present Best Original Song on the night after the elder statesman of songwriting passed on the offer.
Mick Jagger has claimed that he was only asked to take part in the Oscars because he was younger than Bob Dylan, 83, who was invited to present and perform at the event but refused.
The Rolling Stones legend, 81, let slip that he was second choice to present Best Original Song on the night after the elder statesman of songwriting passed on he offer.
Both host Conan O'Brien and best original song presenter Jagger suggested that the subject of the film A Complete Unknown had not wanted to attend the ceremony.
The Oscar for best original song was handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night. It was up to Jagger to announced the winner, El Mal from Emilia Pérez.
“The producers wanted Bob Dylan to do it, but Bob didn’t want to,” Jagger said, perhaps jokingly, adding that Dylan had said: “The best songs this year are obviously in A Complete Unknown. You should find somebody younger. OK, I’m younger than Bob. So here I am.”
Earlier in the evening, Oscars host O’Brien also suggested that Dylan had decided not to join the ceremony.
“Dylan wanted to be here tonight, but not that badly,” O’Brien joked during his monologue.
The song legend, known for classic hits such as Blowin' In The Wind, They Times They Are-A-Changin' and Mr Tambourine Man, is played by Timothee Chalamet in the biopic A Complete Unknown.
It depicts Dylan's early years in New York up until the period where he foregoes his acoustic roots and goes electric much to the chagrin of folk purists.
Musical Wicked enjoyed a magical night at the Oscars with two wins.
Ariana Grande, who played Glinda, and Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) both performed on the night.
Grande started with Somewhere Over the Rainbow before Erivo took over to perform Home from The Wiz.

They also performed together to sing Wicked‘s part one closer, Defying Gravity.
The film was up for 10 nominations and won two, with Erivo and Grande also up for nominations in their respective categories.
