Boy who injected himself with butterfly for 'challenge' suffers painful death
Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, died last Thursday after admitting to medics that he had injected a liquid containing a crushed butterfly into his leg.
A schoolboy who who injected himself with a dead butterfly as part of an "online challenge" has passed away after suffering an agonising seven-day death in hospital.
Davi Nunes Moreira, 14, died last Thursday after admitting to medics in Planalto, Brazil, that he had injected a liquid containing a crushed butterfly into his leg. As reported by the Mirror, the youngster is believed to have been trying out an "online challenge".
He began vomiting and started limping before he tragically deteriorated as he was rushed into hospital by his father, who he had initially told he hurt himself while playing. He remained in the Vitória da Conquista general hospital for a week under specialist care and the Civil Police of Bahia are now awaiting full post-mortem results.
An investigation which has been launched is said to be focused on the possibility he carried out the strange act as part of a social media craze. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas, a specialist at Hospital Santa Marcelina, told Brazilian news site VivaBem that the 14-year-old could have suffered "an embolism, an infection, or an allergic reaction".

He added: "We don't know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body. There may have been air left inside, which could lead to an embolism,"
He added that such a condition can lead to "sudden deterioration and death." Investigators are also reportedly looking into the possibility that the youngster may have gone into septic shock after toxins from the mix caused his body to shut down.
Some Brazilian media are openly speculating he had picked up on an experiment he saw online, although Davi is said to have denied the allegation when it was put to him before he passed away. After admitting to injecting the solution, he reportedly told medics that he went into a chemist to pick up supplies before mixing a dead butterfly in water and injecting the liquid into his right leg.
His father found the syringe his son used to inject himself under his pillow while he was tidying up the house, according to local reports. Civil Police in Vitoria da Conquista, who are leading the investigation, are due to carry out an autopsy which will help establish Davi's the cause of death.
