Netflix's new true crime documentary, American Murder: Gabby Petito, reveals a shocking letter titled "Burn After Reading" that Roberta Laundrie wrote to her son, Brian Laundrie. Brian Laundrie was the primary suspect in Gabby Petito's disappearance and murder in August 2021. Petito disappeared on August 27, 2021, but her mother did not report her missing until September 11, 2021. The FBI and local law enforcement worked together to find Petito, and they discovered her remains on September 19, 2021. Netflix's crime show reveals that the FBI had already begun searching for Brian Laundrie, their primary suspect, by this point.
Investigators and Laundrie's parents found Brian Laundrie's body on October 20, 2021. His autopsy report dictated that he had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Approximately a year and a half after Gabby Petito's tragedy, a letter Brian Laundrie's mother, Roberta Laundrie, wrote to her son surfaced in the media. Although CNN reported that Gabby Petito's family initially struggled to get a hold of the letter, they succeeded. Netflix's documentary details the contents of Roberta Laundrie's letter, including suggestive statements that Brian Laundrie's parents could have something to do with Gabby Petito's disappearance and murder.
Roberta Laundrie Told Her Son To Burn Her Letter After Reading It
Roberta Laundrie's letter to her son says some potentially incriminating things. Gabby Petito's family recalls their reactions to this letter in American Murder: Gabby Petito, but CNN published it in May 2023. The contents of the letter are disturbing because it is more than just about a mother professing her love for her son. Roberta Laundrie promised Brian Laundrie that she would "bake a cake with a file" inside if he "were in jail," and she would "show up with a shovel and garbage bags" if he needed to get rid of someone's body.
Brian Laundrie's mother makes additional absurd claims, such as a promise to "get new guts" if he hated hers and that she would watch the sky for his return if he flew to the moon. Roberta Laundrie also quoted the New Testament in a proclamation that nothing could ever come between them. Her letter reiterates this message repeatedly while reassuring her love for him. Roberta Laundrie addressed this letter to her son and notoriously titled it "Burn After Reading," another possible indication that Brian Laundrie's parents could have been involved in covering up Gabby Petito's murder.
Roberta Laundrie Said She Wrote It Months Before Petito Was Murdered
Despite this letter's shocking statements, Roberta Laundrie claims that she wrote it months before Gabby Petito's death. Roberta Laundrie released a public statement through her lawyer, Steven Bertolino, insisting that she was just a mother using extreme language to describe the love she had for her son. In additional court documents, Laundrie explains that she wrote the letter because she and her son were going through a difficult time in their relationship (via Global News). Roberta Laundrie also claims that particular excerpts were highlighted by Schmidt and Petito's lawyer.
I truly loved my son, and simply wanted to convey to him how much he meant to me and how much I loved him. I am sure people use phrases all the time to express to their loved ones the depths of their love. Although I chose words that I thought would be impactful with Brian given our relationship, the letter was in no way related to Gabby.

Despite Roberto Laundrie's statement, Gabby Petito's family moved forward with their lawsuit against the Laundrie family. They claimed that Brian Laundrie notified his parents of Petito's death and said he needed a lawyer (via CNN). Netflix's American Murder: Gabby Petito backs up this claim by revealing Brian Laundrie's phone call logs to his parents and their calls to an attorney. Furthermore, the Laundries immediately paid their attorney $25,000. Gabby Petito's father and stepfather believe it indicates that Brian Laundrie's parents knew what had happened.
Criminal Experts Say It Is Unlikely To Occur
According to CNN's legal experts, it is unlikely that Roberta Laundrie will be charged with anything. Legal analyst Joey Jackson says, "It would be difficult to [incriminate] her as an accessory after the fact" because Roberta Laundrie had not "taken any substantial step towards the commission of that crime." Another legal analyst, Elie Honig, insists that the letter by itself is not enough to charge someone as an accessory to murderâbut it could be used as evidence in pursuing a case regarding obstruction or being an after-the-fact accessory.

True crime has always been a popular genre for TV shows and movies, but what are the best true crime shows that dramatize the source stories?
The FBI investigators interviewed in Netflix's American Murder: Gabby Petito state that they still do not know the extent of Brian Laundrie's parents' involvement. Therefore, there may be an ongoing investigation into whether Chris and Roberta Laundrie were involved as accessories or obstructed justice. However, this letter was critical evidence in Gabby Petito's family's wrongful death lawsuit against the Laundrie family. Although prosecution is unlikely, Gabby Petito's family still wants to see criminal charges brought against the Laundries.
