Brilliant free museum in Wales where BBC's latest big drama was filmed
The new BBC series is set in post-war London, but it was actually filmed in a museum that's a core school trip memory for those from Wales
BBC One's big new Saturday night drama, Dope Girls might be set in post-WWI London, but it's filmed here, right in the heart of Wales. With the second episode of the drama, produced by Bad Wolf (the company responsible for Doctor Who), airing on BBC One on Saturday, March 1, we've taken a look at one of the many locations used for the six-part series which is "inspired by a forgotten time in history", delving into post-war society and the rise of female empowerment following World War One.
Set in Soho, Dope Girls vividly portrays the birth of the modern nightlife industry, shaped and shined by determined female effort. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter.
Although, despite being set in post-war London the series has actually been filmed across Wales. In true Bad Wolf style they have acknowledged the beauty on their door step and used their own beautiful country to portray the grittiness of the show.
This includes the brilliant free museum in Wales that's a core school trip memory for those from Wales. You can see more Welsh locations, here.

As some of you may have guessed, this is the very popular Welsh tourist attraction, St Fagans National Museum of History, which is one of Europe's leading open–air museums. The museum stands in the grounds of St Fagans Castle and gardens, a late 16th century manor house donated to the people of Wales by the Earl of Plymouth in 1948.
Over 50 historic buildings from all over Wales have been re-built at the museum including a Victorian school, a medieval church and a Workmen’s Institute. Within the new BBC series, the Llwyn-yr-Eos Farmhouse is used to show the interior of the Turners House and it is accessible to the public so if you want to call by and see where the show was filmed you can!
St Fagans has to be one of my favourite places to go for a day out, whatever the weather, and in Wales it’s a good idea to find something you don’t mind doing when it’s raining outside, for obvious reasons.
Two of the court buildings from Llys Rhosyr have been recreated at St Fagans as Llys Llewelyn. (Image: John Myers)I’ve been going to the museum since I was very young with my family, I’d don some dungarees and wellies, we’d pack up a picnic and make a day of it. Entry to the museum is completely free and allows you to spend the day on the grounds and roam around in your own time, which you’ll need as there’s so much to do and you’ll want to make sure you see everything.
I also went on several school trips to the museum whilst in primary school, this the transgressed to taking trips to St Fagans in my adulthood too. On average, I think I go once or twice a year. In fact after finishing our A-Levels, my friends and I didn't go out clubbing like most people, we decided to spend the day in St Fagans, strolling around and having a picnic whilst watching people dance around a May pole.
I think it’s the perfect location for children and adults alike, whether they are Welsh and learning about their own culture or if they are from elsewhere and keen to learn about Welsh history.
For me, the best part of the whole museum are the Rhyd-y-car terraces aka the houses through time. It gives you the chance to see how houses have changed from 1805-1985. I love seeing how styles and technology developed, and it always makes me laugh going in to the final house and essentially seeing most of my grandparent's decor that they still have to this day.
Other than paying for parking, which is £7 for the full day, everything else is relatively cheap depending on what you decide to buy there. Personally, I can’t go to St Fagans without buying some traditional sweeties from the sweet shop (my favourites are the pineapple cubes) and inevitably getting a cup of tea and a scone from the bakery.
Enjoying a pint at a sunny St Fagan's Food Festival a few years back, whilst local and independent live music plays in the back. (Image: Indigo Jones)One of my favourite times of year to go to the museum is when the food festival is on in the Summer, with this year’s event being held on September 14 & 15. The festival hosts various food and drink vendors as well as plenty of live music from local independent artists. It adds an extra element to your day out and perfectly contrasts the historical tradition of the museum and the modern tradition of food festivals.
For more information about the food festival you can visit the website here. To catch up or binge on all the Dope Girls episodes, visit BBC iPlayer.
