Brits with garage doors urged to protect your property now by one simple measure
People living in the UK have been warned to secure homes with last-minute DIY hacks as Storm Eowyn brings high winds and heavy rain today.
With Storm Éowyn expected to unleash heavy winds and rain across the UK today, homeowners are being urged to act quickly to protect their properties.
For those caught off guard or unable to make extensive preparations, Robert Quinton, DIY expert and director of Construction Megastore, has shared a series of practical, last-minute hacks to help minimise storm damage.
“Storm Éowyn is a powerful reminder of the need for home resilience,” Quinton said.
“Even small actions can make a big difference in protecting your property during extreme weather.”
Here he shares his top tips for storm preparation with Express.co.uk - from securing outdoor furniture to protecting garage doors.
1. Secure loose outdoor itemsLoose garden furniture, decorations, or tools can quickly turn into dangerous projectiles in high winds.
“If time is short, securing these items is one of the most effective measures you can take,” Quinton said.
He added: “If you can’t bring them indoors, tie them down as securely as possible using ropes or heavy-duty tape.”
2. Block gaps around doors and windowsPreventing wind and rain from entering your home is vital.
“Use everyday items like towels, blankets, or even plastic sheeting to block gaps,” Quinton said.
He added: “Tape the plastic securely over windows for added protection. It’s not ideal, but it’s a quick fix when weatherproofing materials aren’t available.”
3. Clear gutters and downpipesOne of the simplest but most effective ways to avoid water damage is to ensure gutters and downpipes are free of debris.
“A quick sweep with a broom or rake can prevent blockages that might cause gutters to overflow,” said Quinton.
4. Reinforce windowsIf flying debris is a concern, reinforcing windows with temporary measures can help reduce the risk of shattering.
“Plywood is the best option if you have it, but even cardboard or tape can offer some protection,” Quinton said.
He added: “While it’s not completely storm-proof, it can lessen the damage.”
5. DIY sandbags for flood protectionFor those in flood-prone areas, makeshift sandbags can act as a barrier to rising water.
“Large plastic bags filled with dirt or sand can be placed at low points around your home,” Quinton said.
He added: “Ensure the bags are properly sealed and positioned to block water entry. While not a perfect solution, they can buy you time.”
6. Reinforce your garage doorThe garage door is often overlooked during storm preparations but can be a weak point in extreme winds.
“Simply closing the garage door and reinforcing it with a brace or beam can prevent it from being blown in,” Quinton said.
“This small step can minimise further damage to your property.”
Met Office warnings remain in place for severe weather, with residents advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm. For more guidance, consult your local council or emergency services.
