It’s hardly surprising. Jones grew up in Toronto with his parents Denise and Allan Jones. Both were passionate about promoting reggae in their adopted home. They founded Jones and Jones in the late 1980s, a company specializing in event management and production that focused on Black and multicultural artists. They often presented plays, concerts and events that put a spotlight on the Afro-Caribbean community. They established the Toronto-based JAMBANA One World Festival in 2009. Denise, who died in 2020, was renowned for her tireless championing of Canadian reggae artists. She convinced the Junos to create a separate category for the genre in 1994.

“I was going back and forth to Jamaica, learning about my roots,” says Jones, who is now president of the company his parents founded. “My parents first met there in the theatre and that’s where they got the inklings of starting Jones and Jones as a production company because they were very entrenched in production and artistry. So Bob was always playing throughout my life as long as I can remember. One of the best things about it is that you can go back to Bob’s music at any age and hear it and feel it differently based on what you were experiencing at the time.”

In 2022, Jesse and his brother Jerimi were paying tribute to their mother at the Juno Awards while accepting the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award on her behalf. Jesse was met backstage by Calgary Philharmonic president and CEO Marc Stevens and they began discussing the possibility of collaborating. Jones suggested a rare symphonic-reggae mix.

“I said ‘What about this? A tribute to Bob Marley,’ Jones says. “I mean it’s his 80th coming up and there’s lots of activity, but symphony style. We’ve got the band, we’ve got the performers but then we work and collaborate with the symphony on how we can reimagine the music, orchestra-style. His eyes lit up. My eyes lit up. It was at that point that we started the groundwork on this program.”

The show arrives just in time to mark what would have been Marley’s 80th year. His birthday is Feb. 6. He died in 1981. The concert will mix well-known songs with deeper cuts while offering insights into the singer’s life and influence. Giving reggae a symphonic makeover is not a common practice. This is certainly the first time the Calgary Phil, which tackles numerous genres, will perform reggae.

“It’s very rare but very exciting,” Jones says. “I think it’s the first of its type here in Canada. This is the bridging of the gap: it’s working with other cities, other provinces and representatives of who are here in Canada, the diasporic makeup of who we are. I just think it’s beautiful that we have Ontario and Alberta connecting here in peace, love and unity. I believe, not to get too political here, our country needs this togetherness. We are Canadians. We are different but the same. We also have our unique attributes and all of that will be on display at this event where we’re all coming together and unifying with our individual attributes. It’s a testament to Bob’s music. As militant as it can be and the teachables that are in there, there is a sense of unity and one love that we are going to have on display at a time when we need it more than ever.”
