Carey Mulligan ‘Just Started’ Filming ‘Beef’ Season 2 and Says ‘Almost Everything’ Is Different, Says She Won’t Appear in Emerald Fennell’s ‘Wuthering Heights’
Carey Mulligan joined the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance and said she won't appear in Emerald Fennel's "Wuthering Heights."
Carey Mulligan revealed at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance that she “just started” filming the second season of Netflix’s series “Beef.” The first season won Emmys for leading stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, so anticipation is high for the new episodes. The show’s second season will feature a new storyline and an entirely new cast, headlined by Mulligan, Oscar Isaac (with whom she starred in the Coen Bros.’ “Inside LLewyn Davis”), Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny.
“We just started. Almost everything [is different],” Mulligan told Variety’s Tatiana Seigel said when asked about the new season. “But it’s still [creator Lee Sung Jin] being brilliant. It’s a completely new story and if I say anything else then a laser beam will appear on my head. But it’s very exciting.”
Another project Mulligan can’t talk about is Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights,” starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. Mulligan earned an Oscar nomination for leading Fennell’s feature directorial debut “Promising Young Woman,” then popped up in a memorable supporting role in the director’s follow-up film “Saltburn.” But a third collaboration will have to wait for now, as Mulligan confirmed to Variety she is not joining the “Wuthering Heights” cast.
“Not on this one. She’s shooting now,” Mulligan said. “But hopefully all of them in the future. I would love that.
Netflix confirmed last fall that it was officially moving forward with a second season of “Beef.” The official logline for the new season states: “A young couple witnesses an alarming fight between their boss and his wife, triggering chess moves of favors and coercion in the elitist world of a country club and its Korean billionaire owner.” “Beef” Season 2 will consist of eight 30-minute episodes.
Mulligan is at Sundance this year with her supporting role in “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” directed by James Griffiths from a script by Tom Basden and Tim Key. The movie centers on an eccentric lottery winner who invites his two favorite musicians to play a private show on his remote island. They agree, much to his surprise. The movie is a feature-length adaptation of the short film “The One and Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island,” which won best short film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was nominated for a 2008 BAFTA.
“I was so exited to be invited into the world of this mad trio based on the short film, which is so brilliant,” Mulligan said about signing on to the indie. “I just wanted to be in something that is a good thing to put into the world and that is just lovely and gorgeous. It’s necessary to have something nice. It was so brilliantly written and the music was so beautiful.”
Focus Features is releasing “The Ballad of Wallis Island” in theaters on March 28 following its Sundance world premiere.
