“Because this is a prequel, we had to kind of look like the original actors. And it’s crazy,” Mendez, 46, acknowledged, “because I am much younger and don’t look like him. He was in his 50s and 60s, while my Hector Estrada is much younger.”
Beyond being perennial bad guys, cartel leaders have distinct personalities. Mendez’s Hector is not, he said in a Zoom interview, “A crazy killer. He’s very methodical. Knows exactly what he’s doing. Knows exactly what he wants — and knows exactly how he’s gonna get what he wants.
“He’s building an empire. He’s the biggest cartel guy on this side, and he’s trying to make a name for himself. Just take over the whole drug trade.
“I don’t really judge. I just go about how this guy wants what he wants. He doesn’t see himself as bad; he sees himself as a businessman. And it’s never, ever personal with him. It’s all just business.”
Who is Dexter at this point?
“Since it is a prequel, he’s like five years old. He’s just a little boy. All of my scenes are with Dexter’s mom.”
It’s a departure for Mendez who began acting in his early 30s when he moved from Miami where he was raised to LA where he was born.
“Because nobody has seen me do this kind of character, hopefully this will give me more opportunities. Usually, I play a cop but I’m actually the funny guy. So as a dark character like this, nobody’s seen that.”
Mendez grew up fixated on acting, following in the footsteps of his older sister Eva (“2 Fast 2 Furious,” “We Own the Night”) who retired to raise a family with her husband Ryan Gosling.
Although they’ve always been close, career-wise they have stayed on separate paths.
“I’ve been doing this for 15,16, years. Of course it’s been a struggle, up and down, like it is for everybody when it comes to acting. You got your moments where you’re booked up — and then you don’t know where your next job is coming from.
“It’s a very tough industry. There’s a lot of competition. You just have to keep working hard.
“In having a famous sibling, most people don’t know unless they happen to find out we have the same last name.”
With Eva, “We talk, but I don’t talk to her when it comes to the business. I’m not trying to ask for any favors.
“I’m just trying to do as much as I can on my own and prove myself as much as I can.”
