Carol and Stephen Baxter's tragic deaths explored in Essex Millionaire Murders

The two-part documentary, The Essex Millionaire Murders, starts on ITV tonight (April 28), delving into one of the most intricate investigations ever conducted by Essex Police. The series revisits the chilling events of April 9, 2023, when a couple was discovered dead in their West Mersea residence.
The programme features candid interviews with four key officers from Essex Police, including Detective Inspector Lydia George, who led the investigation. After an extensive probe, family friend Luke D'Wit was found guilty of murdering the Baxters.
D'Wit was slapped with a life sentence, serving a minimum of 37 years behind bars - one of the harshest sentences ever handed down following an Essex Police investigation.
The documentary also sheds light on D'Wit's manipulation and control over the Baxter family in the years leading up to their tragic demise. As part of his deceit, he crafted numerous fake identities, even masquerading as a doctor.

What happened to Stephen and Carol Baxter?Now 35, D'Wit murdered the Baxters using fentanyl after posing as a doctor and forging a Will to ensure he profited financially.
He took charge of Carol's medication under the guise of helping her combat her autoimmune disease, but instead exacerbated her health issues.
On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, a shocking discovery was made on Mersea Island. Carol and Stephen were found dead in their home by their daughter, with no visible injuries or clear cause of death.
It wasn't until weeks later that a toxicology report revealed the couple had died from fentanyl poisoning. The last person to see them alive was their friend, D'Wit.
Just two days prior, on April 7, D'Wit had administered a lethal dose of fentanyl to the unsuspecting couple. He had even installed a camera in their home to observe their demise.
Upon his arrest, police discovered several fentanyl patches which D'Wit claimed belonged to his deceased father, and later said they were his grandfather's.
In addition to this, officers uncovered a bag filled with metal tacks and pill casings. Investigators believe these items were previously given to Carol, leading to her hospitalisation after x-rays revealed the tacks in her stomach.
During his testimony, D'Wit alleged that he and Stephen were behind fictitious personas used to convince Carol she was receiving medical assistance for her health issues. However, under cross-examination, his story unravelled.
Messages between the fabricated characters and Stephen Baxter were read out, proving it was highly unlikely Stephen was involved in D'Wit's plot.
The documentary series 'Essex Millionaire Murders' will be shown on ITV on April 28 and 29 at 9pm.
