Missouri-born pop superstar Chappell Roan has opened up about being labelled a “diva” in a new interview, saying that she would be “way bigger” if she were to “override more of my basic instincts.”
Since her rise to fame, Roan has been a growing target for public and media criticism, mainly aimed at her dedication and desire to call out “creepy behaviour” — of which there is plenty for a young woman in the spotlight.
Some recent instances include calling out stalkers, establishing boundaries with fans, and addressing toxic paparazzi culture after specifically calling out a photographer on the red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards for harassing stars.
Discussing these experiences during a recent interview with BBC Radio 1, Roan said that she has reacted to such behaviour all her life, but it’s different now that there are cameras on her and that she is in the spotlight. As a result, fame has transitioned basic boundaries into what some label “diva” tendencies.
“I was looking around, and I was like, ‘This is what people are okay with all the time? And I’m supposed to act normal? This is not normal. This is crazy,'” Roan said. Continuing: “I’ve been responding that way to disrespect my whole life — but now there are cameras on me, and I also happen to be a pop star, and those things don’t match. It’s like oil and water.”
Reflecting on how this has impacted her career and reputation, she added: “I think, actually, I’d be more successful if I was OK wearing a muzzle,” saying that if she were to “override more of my basic instincts,” she would be “way bigger” and still on tour.
The singer put a stop to her tour to focus on her mental and physical health, a move she said was encouraged by her late grandfather, who reminded her that “there is always options.” While some may push her to take certain opportunities under the pretence that they will likely never come around again, she shuns the pressure, instead choosing to listen to her instinct.
“There’s something he said that I think about in every move I make with my career,” she said, “There are always options. So when someone says, ‘Do this concert because you’ll never get offered that much money ever again’, who cares? If I don’t feel like doing this right now, there are always options. There is not a scarcity of opportunity, I think about that all the time.”
