Charli XCX wins five Brit Awards including Artist of the Year

Charli XCX continued her Brat domination at the Brit Awards tonight, winning five categories including the coveted album of the year for her culture-shaping record Brat.
The British star, 32, also secured artist of the year; dance act; song of the year for her track Guess featuring US superstar Billie Eilish; and she was awarded the songwriter of the year trophy that was announced earlier in the week.
This year’s ceremony was held at London’s O2 Arena, with comedian Jack Whitehall presenting for the fifth time.
Brat was named the 2024 Collins Word Of The Year, redefined as "characterised by a confident, independent and hedonistic attitude".
Taking to the stage to collect the best dance act award, Charli XCX spoke about the importance of the genre to her, saying: "I feel like this genre of music, for me, it's euphoric.
"It allows me to escape. It allows me to feel on such a deep level. Maybe that's not the way for everyone, but for me it is."
She then turned to thank "some legends in the field" who have inspired her, including Justice, Daft Punk, Sebastian, Honey Dijon, Robin, Archer, MIA and Aphex Twin.
She also gave a nod to her collaborator, the late music producer Sophie who died in 2021, adding that "none of us would be up here without" them.
Elsewhere, pop band The Last Dinner Party scooped up the prize for Best New Artist, while jazz group Ezra Collective won their first ever Brit Award for Best Group.
Sam Fender took home the trophy for Alternative/Rock act, while Sabrina Carpenter picked up the Global Success award.
There was also a special tribute to One Direction singer Liam Payne who died in October last year, aged 31.

Danny Dyer’s x-rated outbursts
The Eastenders actor, who presented the International Song of the Year award, appeared to get bleeped by ITV.

According to The Mirror, Dyer told those in the O2 Arena tonight: "She couldn't be f***ed to be here," before introducing a video message by the US pop singer.
When talking to Jack Whitehall about his new film Marching Powder, Dyer was bleeped again for a rant about Keir Starmer.
He then said the world was being run by b*******, before Danny then said Keir Starmer wins "b******* of the year".
Teddy Swims wows in stuffed-animal coat
The Lose Control singer turned heads on the Brit Awards red carpet, wearing a brightly coloured stuffed animal coat.
Social media users poked fun at the singer, saying he looked suspiciously similar to a character on the hit TV show Glee.

A picture of Rachel Berry, played by American actress Lea Michele, wearing a dress with various stuffed toys circulated online, prompting people to ask: "Who wore it better?"
One user on X posted a picture of the Glee character wearing the makeshift dress and wrote: "Omg, Rachel Berry?"
Other social media users believe his stuffed toy coat is a homage to his stage name.
Brits rising star urges ‘save grassroots venues’
Brits Rising Star winner Myles Smith urged the Government, companies that own venues, and music executives, to "protect" industry foundations and help save grassroots venues, in his acceptance speech.
The singer, 26, from Luton, Bedfordshire, who already has two top-10 singles in the UK chart, said: "I was raised by a single mum on free school meals in a state school that only had instruments because of government-backed schemes.

"I grew up in a town that, according to loads of clickbait articles, is the worst town in Luton.
"But yet I'm somehow here, a four-time Brit nominee, a graduate from a Russell Group university.”
Smith, who rose to prominence on video-sharing app TikTok, performed his songs Nice To Meet You and Stargazing at the awards ceremony on Saturday.
Chappell Roan dedicates win to Sinead O’Connor
US pop star Chappell Roan, who rose to fame last year after the viral success of her song ‘Good Luck, Babe!’, dedicated her international artist of the year win to Irish singer Sinead O’Connor who died in 2023, as well as trans artists, drag queens, fashion students and sex workers.
"I'm so sorry that I cannot be there tonight to celebrate with you, but thank you to the Brits for honouring me and recognising me", she said in a video acceptance speech.

Tribute to Liam Payne
The Brit Awards paid a heartfelt tribute to former One Direction member Liam Payne who died in October at the age of 31 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina.
A black and white video showing clips of the English singer with his family, as well as footage from his time as a contestant on The X Factor and with the boyband he found fame with.

One Direction hit Little Things played while footage of Payne recording a version of the song was shown.
The montage also included pictures of Payne holding his son, Bear, and a photograph of him meeting Queen Elizabeth II.
